Airsoft guns are more sophisticated and powerful than ever before. When shopping for an airsoft gun, you’ll want to look for reliability, accuracy and high quality. All of these factors will have an impact on your use of the rifle, regarless of which purpose you get it for.

Airsoft sniper rifles are popular for a variety of different reasons. Let’s take a look at why you’d want to use an airsoft sniper rifle and what features you should consider. Then, we’ll show you in-depth reviews for airsoft sniper rifles – and we’ll tell you which one we think is the best!

The Purpose of Airsoft Sniper Rifles

  • Recreations

Fun! Lots of people are participating in competitive airsoft matches. Similar to paintball, teams compete in indoor and outdoor environments where they play Capture the Flag or just have old-fashioned shootouts.
Here’s a video of some competitive airsoft teams in action:

  • Target Shooting

Target shooting is another hobby enjoyed by airsoft sniper rifle owners. These can be indoors or outdoors. Enthusiasts shoot at paper targets, moving targets and more. Target shooting can be as simple as firing off a few shots at cans in your backyard or as complicated as a big-money shooting tournament.

  • Animal Control

Another common reason people use airsoft sniper rifles is to control animal populations. Many folks find that an airsoft rifle is a useful tool. All kinds of unwanted animals can encroach on property anywhere – rural, suburban and even urban areas. Squirrels, birds, raccoons, coyotes, rats and other unwanted animals can cause a lot of damage to crops, structures and more. They can even pose a significant health risk to humans!

An airsoft rifle lets you startle and scare away those pests without causing them any permanent harm. This is usually an easier, cleaner and more humane solution than lethal means. Of course, not all airsoft rifles are non-lethal to animals. A high enough caliber and velocity can often kill certain small animals such as rabbits or squirrels. Airsoft guns are popular for small game hunting.

So, Why a Sniper Rifle Instead of a Regular Airsoft Gun?

A sniper rifle is all about aim. With target shooting, sniper rifles are a separate category. Target shooting competitions for sniper rifles have long distance targets. Long-distance accuracy is obviously important if you’re shooting at small animals on your property. Many people prefer a sniper rifle for shooting at more dangerous animals such as coyotes or even raccoons. After all, you have to be pretty close to your target if you’re using an airsoft pistol. But perhaps the most popular use of an airsoft sniper rifle is in competitive airsoft matches. Let’s take a look at what that involves.

How Sniper Rifles Help a Team in Competitive Airsoft Sports

An airsoft team needs a variety of specialists, all with different types of weapons. Each member of the team will need a different skillset, so the group can succeed. Almost every airsoft team will have one sniper.

The sniper plays an important, if often unseen, role in any airsoft competition. While the rest of team is running around the playing field, the sniper remains primarily in one spot. They could be up in a tree, atop a hill or otherwise hidden. Their job is to watch the movement of all players. Most team-based airsoft competitions allow the use of walkie-talkies between players. As the sniper, you’ll radio to your teammates to help coordinate their activities.

Your success will largely depend on your ability to stay hidden. This means using the proper camouflage for your environment. Of course, you’ll need to shoot well, too. The terrain will determine your needs, but generally you’ll want to be able to reach target about 200 feet away.

Why Should You Choose a Sniper Rifle

If you’re new to the world of airsoft, a sniper rifle is a great place to start. There are a few reasons for this:

  • You can learn nuances of the game from a bird’s eye view
  • You typically have a stable shooting surface (because you’re not running around)
  • You have a larger scope and easier aiming than a pistol or rifle

What Equipment Do You Need for Competitive Airsoft?

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”160″ identifier=”B00STASDHK” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/51pgobXJvpL.SL160.jpg” tag=”astraightarro-sniperrifle-20″ width=”160″]Competitive airsoft leagues are growing. You can probably find one near you. This can be a fun way to stay active, make friends and shoot your airsoft guns. Aside from your airsoft sniper rifle, you’ll also want the following:

  • [easyazon_link identifier=”B000F7TVH6″ locale=”US” tag=”astraightarro-sniperrifle-20″]Protective eyewear[/easyazon_link] (very important, as the eyes are vulnerable to injury from bb)
  • [easyazon_link identifier=”B00GZCS4GY” locale=”US” tag=”astraightarro-sniperrifle-20″]Lightweight armor[/easyazon_link] for major areas of your body including your chest and legs
  • Camouflage appropriate for the area (wooden, forest, etc.)
  • Radio or [easyazon_link identifier=”B00U8AS5N6″ locale=”US” tag=”astraightarro-sniperrifle-20″]walkie-talkie[/easyazon_link]

How to Choose the Right Type of Sniper Rifle

There are a lot of sniper rifles out there. How do you know which one is best? There are a few factors you’ll want to consider.
First, have a clear idea about when and how you’ll be using your airsoft sniper rifle. Will you be shooting outdoors or in? Are you going to be playing with experienced airsoft shooters or is this more of a fun toy to use around your house?

If you’re going to be outside a lot, you’ll likely want the rifle to be constructed from more durable materials. Some airsoft rifles are primarily made of plastic while others are made from metal. If you’re going to be outdoors, especially in cold or wet weather, metal is likely to last longer. But if you don’t have such heavy duty needs, you’ll probably be fine with plastic (which is often cheaper).

Different Power Drivers for Airsoft Sniper Rifles

There are three different types of airsoft sniper rifle:

  • Spring powered
  • Gas powered
  • Battery powered

A spring-powered gun needs to be cocked before each use. You need to pull the spring back to prepare each shot. This is a slow firing rifle, but also the least expensive of the three. These are also the least powerful rifles in general.

Gas powered rifles use a cartridge. There are three types of gas available. Propane is the cheapest but requires a special adapter to use. CO2 is probably the most common gas used. Cartridges need to be purchased at specialty airsoft stores. Finally, Green Gas is a blend of propane and silicone.

Gas powered rifles are going to have a stronger kick than the battery or spring pumps. If you want an airsoft rifle which feels and shoots the most like a traditional rifle, you’ll want one powered by a gas cartridge. These will be the strongest rifles, and the ones most often used by serious sportsmen and game hunters.

Battery-powered rifles are like spring loaded rifles. Only instead of cocking the gun manually, a battery-powered gear loads the spring.
There are a few different types of batteries. Automatic Electric Guns (AGEs) are the highest quality and price. This is followed by Mid-Price Electric Guns (MPEGs) and then Low Price Electric Guns (LPEGs). All of these have a similar electric-powered piston. The difference is in the quality, price and longevity of the battery.

Muzzle Velocity

You’ll also want to look at muzzle velocity. This is the speed which the bb is fired from the rifle barrel. The higher the number, the greater range and accuracy you’ll have.

BB’s have a different shape than a traditional bullet. You’ll need to adjust for this when aiming. A stronger rifle will be easier to aim. The strongest type of sniper rifle will usually be gas powered.

There’s a lot to like here. The impressive muzzle velocity of 750 rounds per minute packs a punch while also increasing accuracy.

The Well l96 is well-made and solid, but the bolt action and low velocity make it less suited for distance shooting than the H&K.

The AGN L96 is well-rounded and easy to transport. This is a good choice for team-based airsoft competition, but we still give the edge to the H&K overall.

The HK SL9 has a powerful motor, durable metal gears and a high muzzle velocity. This is our favorite airsoft sniper rifle.

If you are in the market for a new knife, the chances are you have come across a variety of blades containing different materials. While each blade will offer the same basic abilities with cutting and hacking in the short term, each brings with it own set of advantages and caveats which are essential to consider when making a decision as to which knife to invest in.

Making sure that you select a Steel that will fit your specific purpose will ensure that you get the most out of your knife. Also, knowing the properties of different types of Steel is absolutely essential to ensuring the tool’s proper upkeep and preparation. In order to get the most value from your knife, it is important to have an understanding of how Steels and other materials differ from one another, as it will enable you to pick the correct blade for the job at hand as well as enable you to look after it properly.

What Makes Steel Different?

Steel blades differ based on the combination of various different ingredients used to comprise the blade. Each of these ingredients adds something to the blade, and Steel types are combinations which vary the levels of these elements.

The common elements found in knife Steel are these: Chromium, Carbon, Manganese, Copper, Cobalt, Molybdenum, Nickel, Nitrogen, Sulfur, Silicon, Phosphorus, Tungsten, and Vanadium. Differing the present levels of each of these elements in the Steel used will give you a different type of Steel that embodies the different properties of these elements.

The Properties Of The Elements

Chromium is mixed into Steel to combat corrosion and is found mostly in Stainless Steel knives as a major ingredient. While it is an essential component, too much Chromium can decrease the toughness of the blade. Copper is also used to combat corrosion.

Carbon is used to harden the Steel, increasing the blade’s lifespan. Having high Carbon levels present in your blade’s Steel will generally ensure that the blade wears less over time, however, just as with Chromium overly, high levels can decrease blade toughness.

Manganese, much like Carbon, is used to harden the Steel but can increase brittleness if used in too high a quantity. Tungsten and Vanadium are also used to increase the wear resistance of the Steel, and so these are the elements to look for in a knife that you need to last a long time.

The levels of Phosphorus, Cobalt, and Silicon present will dictate the blade’s strength, while Molybdenum acts to maintain this strength even at higher temperatures.

Knife blade Steel is a fine science which requires precise mixing. By using this breakdown of elements as a guide, you can make an informed decision when looking at the different mixes of Steel available to you to make sure that the blade you select is fit to your specific purposes.

The Different Types Of Knife Blade Steel

One of the main discussions usually found around knife blade Steel is Stainless Steel vs Carbon Steel, however, this is relatively misleading as it leads to the assumption that these are the only two options available on the market. In truth, there are many more varieties of knife blades available, though Stainless and Carbon Steel do make up the majority of commercially available knives.

Stainless Steel

ESEE-4 is a great Carbon Steel knife. Click on image for more details

Stainless Steel knives are probably the most common household name when it comes to knife blades, as the majority of kitchen knives are made of Stainless Steel. Stainless Steel knives are highly desirable to many due to their rust resistance, which is a factor brought about by their high levels of Chromium. This is the material from which some of the best bushcraft knives are made of.

Of course, there are many different subsets of Stainless Steel blades which contain varying degrees of different elements. Two notable examples of Stainless Steel blades are the 400 series and the AUS series. The 400 series ranges from 420 Steel – which is a low-end Steel with poor hardness and edge retention but exceptional rust resistance even from salt water – to the 440 Steels – which offer varying degrees of rust resistance and hardness.

The Japanese AUS series makes use of Vanadium to improve the wear resistance of the Steel and improve toughness. Importantly, it also makes the blade easier to sharpen.

Pros and Cons:

  • Stainless Steel is exceptionally useful in situations that require rust resistance
  • Typically poorer at retaining an edge and much harder to sharpen than other materials.

Carbon Steel

Spyderco Lil Lion Spy is a great example of carbon steel knife. Click on image for more details.

Carbon Steel knives are usually denoted by numbers marking their Carbon content. The 10XX series ranges from 1045 to 1095, with the last two numbers measuring the Carbon percentage (1045 containing 0.45% Carbon and 1095 containing 0.95% Carbon). While the Carbon content increases with the numbers in the series, the Manganese decreases, which in essence means that blades higher up in the series are more wear resistant but less tough, and while the lower end of the series does not hold an edge as well the higher end is much easier to sharpen and holds its edge much better.

The major drawback of Carbon Steel vs Stainless Steel is that while Carbon Steel is usually much tougher and more durable, it lacks the rust resistance of Stainless Steel, particularly higher up the series. For this reason, many of the higher end 10XX series knife blades will come with a resistant coating to ward off the rust. It is also important that these blades are stored properly to protect them.

Pros and Cons:

  • Incredibly tough and resistant, holds an edge impressively
  • Not rust resistant requires much more maintenance than Stainless Steel

Specialist Steels

Mission Knives 1717PS Mission MPT-A2 is a great example of A2 steel knife. Click on image for more details.

Tool Steels are Steels specifically designed and tailored to perform certain tasks. A notable example is A2 Steel, which is extremely tough and often used to make combat knives. The downsides to this Steel is its poor wear resistance and its propensity to rust due to low Chromium content. Some other examples of tool Steel are M2 Steel – very heat resistant and holds an edge well, but brittle at larger sizes – O1 and O6 Steel – extraordinarily good edge retention, but quick to rust due to high carbon content – and W2 Steel – an ultra-hard steel with great edge retention.

Pros and Cons

  • Very good at meeting specific requirements for specialized jobs
  • Expensive and tends not to cater to the general market

Alloy Steels are Steels that are comprised of element combinations which mean that they do not fall into either Stainless or Carbon Steel classifications. Perhaps the best example of this is 5160 Steel, which is 1060 Carbon Steel (0.60% Carbon) mixed with a small amount of Chromium. Though there is insufficient Chromium present to be truly rust-resistant, there is enough to make the blade especially strong and tough. These Steels are perfectly fine for most jobs, but – like tool Steels – are usually specifically rendered for a specific purpose that sits outside that of a common all-purpose knife.

Non-Steel Blades

Promate Scuba Dive Snorkel Titanium Knife is a great example of Titanium knife. Click on image for more details.

Titanium blades are very lightweight, flexible and tough. Problematically, these blades do not hold their edges well. For these reasons, blades from Titanium suppliers tend to only be used for diving, vanity pieces, and custom knives.

Ceramic blades are very brittle blades which offer exceptional hardness and edge retention, as well as having no Steel in them to rust. While this does mean that they are incredibly easy to keep, it also means that they are far less flexible than the majority of other materials available. This makes them perfect as diving knives, but a lot less useful in other situations.

Pros and Cons:

  • Extraordinarily tough and great edge retention, easy to maintain
  • Inflexible and limited in its use

What Factors Should You Consider When Comparing Different Knife Blade Steels?

Of course, knowing about the makeup of different types of knife blade Steel is just one part of the equation when it comes to making a decision about which blade to choose. In addition to this, you have to consider the work that you are planning to use the blade for, the storage facilities you have available, the conditions in which you will be using it, and – importantly – your own abilities knife care and maintenance.

For example, buying a Stainless Steel knife is perfect for the user who wants to get the most out of their knife without needing to worry as much about the upkeep and protection of the blade, and makes an ideal companion for damp or waterlogged situations such as camping and cooking. However, if your task requires a blade that will retain its edge for a longer period of time – such as survival situations – then Carbon Steel knives are likely much more fit for purpose.

The caveat of Carbon Steel compared to Stainless Steel is that it requires much more maintenance and protection due to its lack of rust resistance. This means that if you are unsure of your own abilities with maintaining blades or lack the proper tools and storage facilities for such a blade, you are safer falling back on a Stainless Steel blade.

Of course, as noted above, Stainless Steel and Carbon Steel are not the only options available on the market. However, they are certainly the most widely applicable options. Alloy Steels and Tool Steels are highly specialized to their purposes and do not have the flexibility offered by Stainless Steel and Carbon Steel.

Ceramic blades, similarly, are really fit to one specific purpose rather than a broad range of different purposes. For an all-purpose knife such as a survival knife, therefore, these materials are rather less than ideal.

The variety of Steels available for common knife blades is great, and there are a number of different combinations to suit specific needs and more general needs. Having an understanding of these tools should help you to make a properly informed decision and ensure that you get the right tool for what you are doing.

If you think that your kid could use a bit of enlightenment, develop self-confidence and discipline, and get some exercise on fresh air, then kid’s archery classes may be perfect for you. For one, to excel in archery he or she needs patience, immense concentration, and a high sense of self-control. Normally, the archer is supposed to relax his/her mind and wait for the right moment before releasing the arrow. With each and every shot, young archers learn to not get emotional anytime they make a bad shot. Instead of attaching their ego to their performance, they learn to analyze the shot, and then learn from before preparing for the next one, without emotion. We have prepared 15 more reasons why you really need to teach your kids Archery using junior archery set ideal for kids..

You can usually identify a longbow by its height which is often as tall as the shooter.  This enables the individual who is shooting to have a long draw, approximately to the jaw.  The limbs on a longbow are narrow, and D-shaped or circular in cross section.  If you look at it, the bow looks like a capital “D.” Longbows are typically made from wood like wych elm or yew.  Wooden bows have to be treated carefully and cannot be exposed to excessive dryness or dampness.  They have been used in many cultures for warfare and hunting.  The English and Welsh were known for using powerful longbows against the French in the Hundred Years’ War and in civil wars.  The last documentation of longbow use for warfare was in World War II by British Lt. Col. Jack Churchill, who used it to kill a German soldier.
When shooting a traditional longbow, the stance is relaxed, knees unhinged with a slight crouch.  The shooter should also bend into it.  The arm is slightly cocked at the elbow, instead of the bow arm being straight out.  The anchor point is at or near the jaw or corner or the mouth.  Shooters rely more on instinct since in most cases sights are not used.  Longbows are known to be quiet and efficient, as well as light. If you can master this type of bow, you can shoot from whatever position you choose, even on your stomach.

Top Longbows on the Market in 2017

Below are reviews of the highest ranking longbows on the market today:

#1: Bear AFT2040145 Montana Long Bow Review

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”300″ identifier=”B0017TGM96″ locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/31BYBMWvpQL.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”200″]This longbow designed by Bear Archery, is 64”, smooth and quick.  It was designed by Grant Neil Byce II, a bowyer who was with the Fred Bear company for a very long time. [easyazon_link identifier=”B0017TGM96″ locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]The Montana[/easyazon_link] was first introduced in the late 90s. It has a slightly reflexed design, with tapered limb lamination. The limbs are gracefully designed, faced and backed with high-strength black fiberglass.  Reinforced limb tips are handcrafted, and layered with black and white fiberglass to give the archer a strong draw.  The black Hard-Rock maple riser has limbs overlaid with clear white maple. A standard soft leather grip and FastFlight strings come with this long bow.  The Montana is famous for its clean and classic form.

The Montana Longbow is designed with Futurewood.  Futurewood was first introduced in the 1970s by Fred Bear and was re-introduced in the Bear line due to high demand from customers in 2013.  This wood is similar to natural hardwoods used on the early 1970s bows.  Wood in the handle section takes on totally new physical properties during the manufacturing process.  All of the natural pores in the wood are filled with a pressurized vacuum which increases the bow’s weight, and makes it stronger.  It is then baked and the handle becomes what is called Futurewood.  Futurewood is almost impossible to crack or warp, and the beauty of the natural wood and grain remains intact, making the Montana a strong, durable bow.

#2: Martin Archery Savannah Stealth Longbow Review

This is topped with clear glass and tip overlays of black fiberglass. Brace height on this longbow is 6.5” – 7.5”; draw weight is 40 – 65 pounds.  The Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Organization (AMO) string length is 62”, and the bow weight is approximately 1 pound, 7 ounces.

Included with the Savannah Stealth are a traditional rest, bow sock, and Flemish bowstring.  Its reflex deflex design can hold energy without resulting in hand shock that comes from other longbow models. Just like the name, Savannah Stealth is silent and smooth.  It is a sleek bow that will easily blend into the shadows.  These bows are not manufactured in mass, but handcrafted, and you can tell.  It is a combination of high performance and beauty.  This longbow can also be purchased as a package which includes a rest, quiver, arrows, field points, glove or tab, arm guard, and other accessories.

#3: October Mountain Products Ozark Hunter 68 inch Longbow Review

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”300″ identifier=”B005JBZ7CQ” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/213YQDr0QHL.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”161″]Combining high performance with a smooth draw, this longbow features a sleek handle and limb design that decreases hand shock for the shooter.  The multi-laminate handle has a built-in arrow shelf.

Measuring 68” from tip to tip, this longbow is made from hard maple, purple heart and walnut hardwoods.  The [easyazon_link identifier=”B005JBZ7CQ” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Ozark Hunter[/easyazon_link] features multi-laminate black fiberglass limbs with reinforced limb tips, and is available in 45 or 50 pound draw weights.  It also comes with a Dacron bowstring, and is FastFlight string compatible. The recommended brace height is 6 ½ to 7 ½ “.

Multi-laminated bows means the stave of the bow is formed by laminating different materials together.  This process enables material to be used that is strong in compression on the belly of the bow, and material that is strong in tension on the back of the bow.  The lamination makes it possible to put a strong backing onto the wood.  Purpleheart is an exotic wood found mostly in Central and South America.  It is very resistant to fungi and dry-wood termites. Purpleheart has high-bending and crushing strength and stiffness with medium resistance to shock loads.  This wood combined with hard maple and walnut makes for a strong, high-performing longbow.

#4: Mountain Man Sierra Longbow Review

The limbs are made of clear fiberglass, with reinforced limb tips.  This bow was designed to combine a smooth draw with high performance.

The Sierra has a brace height of 6 ½ – 7 ½ inches and is 68 inches in length.  Draw weight is from 40 to 60 pounds and the bow can be used by a left or right-handed shooter.  A Dacron string is also included with the bow.  The Sierra is Fast Flight string compatible.  Fast flight string tends to be faster and transfers more energy to the arrow.  It also does not stretch once it is settled in.

How Longbows are Made

Longbows are often made by gluing different types of wood together.  This enables use of various properties of different woods.  Some woods are better at withstanding tension, while other woods are better at withstanding compression.  Utilizing them together will yield the best of both. Examples of woods that are used together are bamboo and yew, and hickory and lemonwood. Bamboo or hickory is used on the part of the bow that is facing away from the shooter, which is known as the back.  The part of the bow facing the shooter, also called the belly, is typically made from yew or lemonwood.

Today other materials are used to make longbows, like carbon and fiberglass.  Although there is some advantage to this, many archers still prefer traditional longbows.

Compound Bow vs. Traditional Recurve and Longbows

Compound bows differ from traditional longbows and recurve bows in an important way. The limb tips of the bow do not bend backward towards the shooter. In fact, the exact opposite occurs, the string and harnesses pull the limb tips towards the same direction.  The limbs of the compound bow are also much stiffer in comparison to its other counterparts. This makes the compound bow store energy in a more efficient manner when shooting the bow. Furthermore, there is a pulley cam system consisting of wheels and strings that assist with shooting the bow, which recurve bows and longbows do not possess since they are a continuance of traditional designs whereas the compound bow is a hybrid of old and new technology.

Elements of a Compound Bow

As mentioned above, compound bows rely on a pulley cam system (cams sometimes are referred to as eccentrics). There are four different pulley cam systems in modern compounds: Single, Twin, Hybrid, and Binary. A single cam bow has one harness that pulls the limb tips in the same direction. Twin or two cam bows, however, have two harnesses that have the same function. Hybrid cams have two asymmetrical elliptical cams and they are interconnected to function together.  Binary cams feature a free-floating system, which is essentially a self-correcting system that eliminates synchronization or timing issues for shooters. There are fans of all types of systems who claim that their preferred cam system is the best. In our view, essentially it all boils down to personal preferences. Additionally, you can add compound bow sights, arrow rests, and other accessories to improve the performance of the bow. Lastly, you need to pick a good release for proper shooting with a compound.

Where Can One Buy the Best Compound Bow?

There is a general misconception that one can only buy a good bow at a pro-shop. As with most industries in our technological age, it’s just not true – one can buy great bows online and have them delivered to a doorstep without having to drive to a store. Actually, close to half of all bows sold today are sold online.

Yes, there are different bows that are sold online and in local pro-shops.
No, they are not much different.

In fact, oftentimes same manufacturers carry two products lines under different names and sell them separately online or in pro-shops. Politics and marketing…

Advertising Myths

Many manufacturers like to tout their flagship (often most expensive) product as being a ‘free speed bow’. They claim that it is silky smooth when you draw it, while it also fires at nearly speed-of-light velocity and without making any noise. This is, unfortunately, a myth – there is no a ‘unicorn’ compound bow. Higher performance on one element of a compound bow inevitable means that there is a trade off on another element. There is no singular compound bow that is the most novice-friendly, while also the quietest, most accurate and the fastest of them all. All bows have advantages or disadvantages that must be factored in and considered when purchasing the best compound bow.

What to Look for in Choosing the Best Compound Bow

There are a few key characteristics that you should focus on when choosing the best compound bow: 1) speed 2) draw weight 3) draw length 4) let off 5) brace height and 6) your budget. Let’s go through them one by one.

1) Speed

One of the main factors to focus on that when selecting a compound bow is speed. Speed is expressed with a Feet Per Second (FPS) and all compound bows have their measured FPS speed rating. To ensure consistency, the International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) standardized the approach to speed measurements. All bows are measured on the basis of 70lbs draw weight, 30” draw length and with using a 350-grain arrow. Naturally, if you are with any of these factors different from the standard, the resulting speed will be different.

Generally, when you are choosing a compound bow you should aim for a bow with the highest speed. The faster the speed of an arrow when you shoot, the harder it is for your hunting pray to react to it. Also, the faster the speed, the harder the arrow will hit the target. Make sure you use proper hunting arrows for best results.

2) Draw Weight

Another important factor in choosing the best compound bow is the draw weight. The draw weight is the amount of weight you feel while retracting your bowstring

To increase speed and the amount of energy from the stroke, it is best to shoot from a compound bow that has a high maximum draw weight. For instance, a compound bow that has a draw weight of 60 lbs will have a higher speed of the arrow in comparison to a 50lbs one.  If you decide to hunt deer, a draw weight of 45lbs is the bare minimum needed, so most hunters opt for compound bows with a draw weight of 50-70 lbs.

While higher draw weight does have advantages, it can also be a disadvantage. Although a high draw weight of the bow may result in a deadlier and quicker shot for your prey, if it is too high it can also lead to poor shooting techniques as it will be harder to control when drawing and aiming. To prevent injuries and enable proper shooting techniques it is vital to be able to hold the bow for a minute at least in full draw without shaking and also be able to draw the bow smoothly during the entire draw cycle. However, most compound bows allow for a 10lbs decrease from the maximum weight so that you can start with lower draw weight and increase it once your muscles get stronger from practice.

Below are general guidelines in choosing draw weight:

WeightDraw Weight
Children:
55-70 lbs10-15 lbs
70 – 100 lbs15-25 lbs
100-130 lbs25-35 lbs
130-150 lbs40-50 lbs
Women:100-130 lbs25-35 lbs
130-160 lbs30-40 lbs
160+ lbs45-55 lbs
Men:120-150 lbs45-55 lbs
150-180 lbs55-65 lbs
180+ lbs65-75 lbs

3) Draw Length

The draw length of a compound bow is the distance between positions of the bowstring at rest and at full draw. Having the correct draw length in accordance to your own physical stature is paramount since you can never achieve your full shooting potential without having a properly fitted bow. The general rule of thumb in selecting a draw length is your full arm span divided by 2.5 as illustrated below. However, keep in mind that most bows have adjustable draw lengths.best compound bow reviews

4) Let Off

Another important factor to consider when purchasing a compound bow is the let off. The cams of the compound bow can be held at full draw while only utilizing a small percentage of the draw weight. Let off is calculated as the percentage of peak weight that you hold at full draw, so if your compound bow has a 70lbs draw weight and there is a 75% let off, then your full draw is around 17 pounds (ie you need to pull 17lbs to keep bowstring at full draw). There pros and cons to higher and lower let off. If you have lower let off then this increases the velocity of your arrow, whereas higher let off lets you hold the bow longer at full draw. Too much let off can lead to bad shooting form, however, it can be useful in certain hunting situations when you have to wait for a perfect shot.

5) Brace Height

One more important factor that is crucial in choosing the best compound bow is the brace height. Brace height is the distance from the bowstring to the grip of the shooter. There is a direct correlation between how close the bowstring is to your wrist when it is at rest and how much physical exertion, or work, you must do to draw the bow back. Shorter brace heights result in more stored energy, thus resulting in increased arrow velocity. However, shorter brace heights, around 6.5 or less, are not recommended for novices since minor flaws in shooting technique are amplified in exchange for a shorter brace height. If you are a beginner, it is wise to start with the standard 7-inch brace height.

6) Budget

Lastly, when choosing the best compound bow it is important to consider your budget. There are many compound bows for all types of budgets. However, one should keep in mind that unlike many other industries, when it comes to compound bows price and performance are highly and positively correlated. Patent royalties for use of latest technology, high-performance materials, the complexity of manufacturing – all these elements are factored in a price of a compound bow. The higher the price, the more advanced the bow is.

Because the PSE Surge is so well made, it can serve as a tutorial for the novice bowstriker when he or she wants to get involved with more specialized bows. Many novices should jump at the chance of obtaining a PSE Surge and they will love it.

The Surge is a dual cam compound and it is quite a high-performance weapon, especially for being such a forgiving bow. At its great price, this model has a high registered IBO speed of 312-320 fps and thus delivers more speed than most of the other dual cam compound bows. This speed will work well for target shooting as well as to hunt small to medium sized game. The Surge boasts a very manageable compact 32-1/2” axle to axle brace height along with an incredibly forgiving 7-1/4″ brace height.

The maximum draw length of the Surge is 30 inches and the draw weight is 70lbs, with a let off of 70%. Sinister is made of incredibly light aluminum that gives it ability to be carried by people of all statures and ages. Its large cutouts also relieve a great deal of weight that other bows carry around needlessly, so it is quite lightweight.

Overall, this is a highly recommended model for beginners, it is a high performer, versatile and comes at a great price. Plus, one can’t go wrong with an iconic PSE.

Best for less than $200: Genesis Original Review

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”300″ identifier=”B004T2MOZY” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/31wmbnwzObL.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”300″]This bow is wonderfully suited for all ages and skill levels – young adults and beginners as well as experienced archers. It is an especially good choice for novices since it has light draw weights and covers a wide range of draw lengths. Purchasing the bow is easy because specific measurements are not needed for draw length. Beginner archers will benefit greatly from zero let off as it will help them to develop proper technique from day one. Higher let offs are more forgiving to improper form, so it is important to get technique and form to a high level before upgrading to more advanced compound bows.

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B004T2MOZY” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Genesis Original[/easyazon_link] Bow’s status as the best choice for younger archers is validated by the fact that it is the official bow in the National Archery Schools Program. The bow is widely used in most young archers’ competitions, both national and international.

Made from high-grade aluminum, the Genesis gives optimum balance, durability and it is very lightweight. The bow comes with a molded ergonomic grip for competitions. The Genesis bow features single cam technology which means no tuning is required in the long run. Single cam technology also means that accuracy is greatly increased and noise is minimalized and there is very little recoil. When the draw weight is set at maximum, this bow stores and releases energy comparable to a 35 pound recurve bow.

In our editorial opinion, the Genesis Compound bow is a great bow and a great buy for everyone interested in learning archery. Overall, the best beginners compound bow in 2016.

A bow stabilizer is important if you want to increase shooting accuracy.  It helps lessen bow movement after a shot, and it balances out the weight of your bow.  It should hold your bow steady when it is at full draw, as well as when the arrow is released. When a bow is at full draw, energy builds up in the limbs, cables and other parts of the bow.  Once the arrow is released,  the energy changes abruptly, affecting the flight of the arrow, as well as the bow.  The stabilizer should hold everything stable when this happens. Many stabilizers also reduce noise, hand shock, and vibration, which helps  improve placement of the shot.

Stabilizers come in various styles, sizes, and colors, but they can all screw into your bow.  The added weight to the front of your bow offsets the draw pulling the bow out of alignment, which it often does during aiming. The added weight also steadies the bow.  A stabilizer absorbs vibration force, and reduces shock to the hand.

The size of a stabilizer should be determined by what you will be using it for.  If you are going to be using it for target archery, then a longer, heavier stabilizer is preferred.  The length and heaviness provides more stability when you are shooting.  If you will be bowhunting, then a shorter and lighter stabilizer is more effective.  This is because a heavier, longer stabilizer can be cumbersome when you are hunting animals.

Materials such as plastic, metal, rubber, or a combination of material are used to create stabilizers.  The material and its location affects the performance of the stabilizer.  A stabilizer has a tubelike shape and when attached to the bow, it can cause the bow to be a little heavy.  Sometimes this heaviness is preferred, especially during target competition. But, many manufacturers use material like ABS plastic or carbon as an option to keep the bow as lightweight as possible, when needed.

The dampener on the stabilizer is what reduces vibration and noise.  Most dampeners are made of rubber which acts as a vibration dampener and prevents vibration in the bow’s riser. The most effective set up is when a weight is on the front of the stabilizer right after the dampener.  This maintains effective balance and keeps the bow stable while you are shooting.  It also makes the dampener more effective because it is further away from the bow which decreases the vibration even more.  When vibration is decreased, it is less likely that other accessories will loosen.

#3 Bee Stinger Sport Hunter Xtreme Stabilizer Review

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”40″ identifier=”B00IOQC8DO” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/31zNMK7gj4L._SL160_.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”160″]The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00IOQC8DO” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Bee Stinger stabilizer[/easyazon_link] was developed for optimal stabilization while minimizing vibration caused by shooting.  It features a Sims Internal Harmonic Dampener and a De-Resonator which effectively combine to minimize vibration that is transferred from the riser to the stabilizer when the arrow is released.  The 1 ounce end weights give users the option of adjusting the stabilizer to meet the balance requirements of the hunting bow that they are using.

The patented design of this stabilizer has the compact disc weight at the furthest point of attachment from the bow or the “distal end.”  A very light, rigid carbon fiber rod is used to connect the disc weight to the bow.  This carbon fiber rod is critical because if the rod is weak, the weight cannot effectively resist the energy once the arrow is released.  Bee Stinger works well because the weight is mainly at the distal end and the rod is ultra-light and rigid.  Available lengths for this stabilizer are 6, 8, and 10 inches.  It also comes in a variety of colors like blue, camo, green, camo, pink, purple red, yellow, and Realtree APS.
