Determining Which Recurve Bow Arrow Is Right for You

There are three main materials that arrows for recurve bows are generally made out of. These are wood, aluminum and carbon fiber. Each type of these arrows flies a little bit differently, has different strength characteristics and is priced differently.

Here is a little bit more information on the characteristics of each type of recurve bow arrow so you can choose which one suits your needs the best.

  • Carbon

Most people who want to gain a true advantage over their prey when hunting with a recurve bow choose carbon arrows. These arrows fly straight and you have the biggest selection of broadhead that you can use with them.

These arrows are virtually indestructible and that’s a good thing because they are the most expensive recurve arrows to buy.

  • Aluminum

These metal alloy arrows are not far behind carbon arrows when it comes to performance. They flight straight and impact hard. Where they do differ from carbon fiber arrows is in their durability. These arrows do not usually break but they will bend enough so they become unusable if the hit a solid object hard enough.

You will find when shopping for arrows that aluminum arrows are generally found in the middle price range as far as arrows go.

  • Wood

Yes, believe it or not they still make wooden arrows. As a matter of fact these are the arrows of choice for bow hunting purists. The reason for that is that they do not give you the bonuses that the other two types of arrows give you when shooting a bow. These arrows even feature natural feathers like back in the day.

These arrows tend not to fly as straight and it takes a while to get used to them. They are the least durable arrows but that is not a huge problem because they are generally the least expensive arrows too.

You can usually identify a longbow by its height which is often as tall as the shooter.  This enables the individual who is shooting to have a long draw, approximately to the jaw.  The limbs on a longbow are narrow, and D-shaped or circular in cross section.  If you look at it, the bow looks like a capital “D.” Longbows are typically made from wood like wych elm or yew.  Wooden bows have to be treated carefully and cannot be exposed to excessive dryness or dampness.  They have been used in many cultures for warfare and hunting.  The English and Welsh were known for using powerful longbows against the French in the Hundred Years’ War and in civil wars.  The last documentation of longbow use for warfare was in World War II by British Lt. Col. Jack Churchill, who used it to kill a German soldier.
When shooting a traditional longbow, the stance is relaxed, knees unhinged with a slight crouch.  The shooter should also bend into it.  The arm is slightly cocked at the elbow, instead of the bow arm being straight out.  The anchor point is at or near the jaw or corner or the mouth.  Shooters rely more on instinct since in most cases sights are not used.  Longbows are known to be quiet and efficient, as well as light. If you can master this type of bow, you can shoot from whatever position you choose, even on your stomach.

Top Longbows on the Market in 2017

#1: Bear AFT2040145 Montana Long Bow Review

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”300″ identifier=”B0017TGM96″ locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/31BYBMWvpQL.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”200″]This longbow designed by Bear Archery, is 64”, smooth and quick.  It was designed by Grant Neil Byce II, a bowyer who was with the Fred Bear company for a very long time. [easyazon_link identifier=”B0017TGM96″ locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]The Montana[/easyazon_link] was first introduced in the late 90s. It has a slightly reflexed design, with tapered limb lamination. The limbs are gracefully designed, faced and backed with high-strength black fiberglass.  Reinforced limb tips are handcrafted, and layered with black and white fiberglass to give the archer a strong draw.  The black Hard-Rock maple riser has limbs overlaid with clear white maple. A standard soft leather grip and FastFlight strings come with this long bow.  The Montana is famous for its clean and classic form.

The Montana Longbow is designed with Futurewood.  Futurewood was first introduced in the 1970s by Fred Bear and was re-introduced in the Bear line due to high demand from customers in 2013.  This wood is similar to natural hardwoods used on the early 1970s bows.  Wood in the handle section takes on totally new physical properties during the manufacturing process.  All of the natural pores in the wood are filled with a pressurized vacuum which increases the bow’s weight, and makes it stronger.  It is then baked and the handle becomes what is called Futurewood.  Futurewood is almost impossible to crack or warp, and the beauty of the natural wood and grain remains intact, making the Montana a strong, durable bow.

This is topped with clear glass and tip overlays of black fiberglass. Brace height on this longbow is 6.5” – 7.5”; draw weight is 40 – 65 pounds.  The Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Organization (AMO) string length is 62”, and the bow weight is approximately 1 pound, 7 ounces.

Measuring 68” from tip to tip, this longbow is made from hard maple, purple heart and walnut hardwoods.  The [easyazon_link identifier=”B005JBZ7CQ” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Ozark Hunter[/easyazon_link] features multi-laminate black fiberglass limbs with reinforced limb tips, and is available in 45 or 50 pound draw weights.  It also comes with a Dacron bowstring, and is FastFlight string compatible. The recommended brace height is 6 ½ to 7 ½ “.

Multi-laminated bows means the stave of the bow is formed by laminating different materials together.  This process enables material to be used that is strong in compression on the belly of the bow, and material that is strong in tension on the back of the bow.  The lamination makes it possible to put a strong backing onto the wood.  Purpleheart is an exotic wood found mostly in Central and South America.  It is very resistant to fungi and dry-wood termites. Purpleheart has high-bending and crushing strength and stiffness with medium resistance to shock loads.  This wood combined with hard maple and walnut makes for a strong, high-performing longbow.

The limbs are made of clear fiberglass, with reinforced limb tips.  This bow was designed to combine a smooth draw with high performance.

The Sierra has a brace height of 6 ½ – 7 ½ inches and is 68 inches in length.  Draw weight is from 40 to 60 pounds and the bow can be used by a left or right-handed shooter.  A Dacron string is also included with the bow.  The Sierra is Fast Flight string compatible.  Fast flight string tends to be faster and transfers more energy to the arrow.  It also does not stretch once it is settled in.

How Longbows are Made

Longbows are often made by gluing different types of wood together.  This enables use of various properties of different woods.  Some woods are better at withstanding tension, while other woods are better at withstanding compression.  Utilizing them together will yield the best of both. Examples of woods that are used together are bamboo and yew, and hickory and lemonwood. Bamboo or hickory is used on the part of the bow that is facing away from the shooter, which is known as the back.  The part of the bow facing the shooter, also called the belly, is typically made from yew or lemonwood.

Today other materials are used to make longbows, like carbon and fiberglass.  Although there is some advantage to this, many archers still prefer traditional longbows.

The recurve bow is a bow on which the tips curve away from the shooter, and the string touches part of the limb when the bow is strung.  When using a recurve bow, your arrows have more speed and energy because of the extra bend in the bow. This type of bow holds more energy and is much more efficient at delivering that energy than a straight-limbed bow. Recurve bows allow for a shorter bow which is ideal in certain environments such as in heavy forests and brush or on horseback.

Limbs on a recurve put a lot of pressure on the materials that the bow is made from.  The more extreme the recurve is, the more unstable the bow becomes when it is being strung.  The bow also makes more noise when you shoot it.  Ancient recurves were dangerous if not strung correctly.  They could easily spring back and hurt the shooter.

Today, modern recurve bows are the only ones allowed in the Olympics.  Materials used on modern recurves are fiberglass, and carbon or wood. The center of the bow also called the riser, is usually made from wood, aluminum or magnesium alloy, or carbon. Recurves designed for youth generally have a riser made from plastic or wood.

When purchasing a bow for your child, make sure it is not too hard to pull.  Also, don’t get one that is too light because the child will not fully develop shooting skills. Although your child may be able to handle an adult bow, do not start out with too heavy a draw weight.  If your child does not use the bow in a week or so, it is recommended that you unstring it.  Also, hang the bow vertically from a hook or lay it on its side when it is not in use.

It features a  hand rest which adds to the comfort of the shooter. The heavy weight fiberglass composite limbs make this a durable bow.  It has a center shot compositor riser and a custom all-weather heavy duty string system. The 20 pound draw weight is ideal for beginning archers.  The 25-inch maximum draw will adjust to your child’s growth and last for years to come.  It has an 8-inch brace height, is 45 inches tip to tip, and weighs 2.8 pounds.

Other items included with this set are two composite youth arrows, two-piece quiver, finger tab, an arm guard for protection, arrow rest, and pin sight. Crosman markets this bow as a longbow, but it is actually a takedown recurve.  A takedown recurve usually comes apart in three pieces, generally the riser and two limbs.  It is designed for easy transport and reassembly.

#2: Bear Archery Titan Youth Bow Review

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”160″ identifier=”B002BIPAOK” locale=”US” src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21%2BAOO7jfXL.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”29″]The [easyazon_link identifier=”B002BIPAOK” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Titan bow[/easyazon_link] is recommended for individuals 12 years and up, and can function as a right or left-hand bow.  It is a great starter bow for pre-teens and teenagers.  Overall bow length is 60 inches.  This bow will serve your child well until they are ready for an adult bow. Draw length is 22 to 28 inches, and draw weight is 20 to 29 pounds.  Limbs are constructed with durable composite, and the riser is plastic and rubber-gripped. Although the draw weight is light, this bow is powerful enough to shoot small animals.

Also included with the Titan bow set are an arm guard, two 28 inch safetyglass arrows, quiver, finger tab, and a target to practice with.  You will have to know how to string a bow since the Titan does not come pre-assembled. The string is made of inexpensive polyester, so it’s important that you take good care of it.  But, you can also buy a Dacron string which is more durable.

This bow is very light, weighing just under one pound, but it is still very sturdy. Although it is small, it tends to be a bit noisy, so purchasing a silencer might help decrease the noise.

This bow has a lightweight, slim polymer technology riser with durable glass-reinforced limbs.

Weighing 1.3 pounds, this recurve bow is easy to handle, and an ideal starter set.  It helps develop form and accuracy.  The Easton Youth Bow comes with three XX75 1816 28” vane-fletched arrows which are available in pink or black. Also included are a high-quality Denier fabric hip quiver, which is sturdy and holds up to 12 arrows.  A belt clip on the quiver makes it convenient to carry on a belt or pants. In addition, an arm guard, Dacron string with nocking point set, arrow rest, and finger protector come with this bow.

It is recommended that you use a bow stringer when stringing a recurve bow.  If you string it backward it may invalidate the warranty on the bow.

Takedown recurve bows are just what their name states – recurve bows that can be taken down to pieces (normally 3 pieces).  The middle section is often referred to as the riser whereas the other two parts are simply the limbs of the bow. One simply screws these pieces together and the bow is ready to be strung. Takedown bows are very popular among hunters, especially those who don’t live near hunting grounds, as they offer great portability. As can be seen in the film Deliverance, these bows can also be excellent tools for survival. There are a lot of different bows available on the market and it may be hard to choose the right model. We hope that our takedown recurve bow reviews and guide will help you choose the best takedown recurve bow for your needs and budget.

The bow length is quite long at 62 inches. The design is very elegant, classical and similar to the Super Kodiak.  The rise of the bow is wooden and made from sturdy wood that has been laminated and so are the limbs. Like with most takedown recurve bows you can attach sights and stabilizers. The Samick Sage gives an excellent performance and tests have delivered 150 fps speeds, albeit depending on the arrow and draw weight. This bow is excellent for hunting and it produces very little noise. More details can be found here.

#2: Martin Jaguar Review

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”160″ identifier=”B00753AY42″ locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/31W55Ee3tBL._SL160_.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”160″]The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00753AY42″ locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Martin Jaguar[/easyazon_link] is a budget friendly bow, while still offering quality. It has 60-inch bow length and weighs only 2.7 pounds and it has a brace height of 7 inches. The draw weights offered are in the range of 30lbs to 55lbs. One great feature is that the rise is fitted with Martin’s patented Thermal V grip, which ensures that you keep your grip on the bow – no matter what. As hunters know, different weather conditions can make it hard to maintain a firm grip on the bow, however, that problem is solved with the patent. Overall, if you are looking for an inexpensive way to get into archery or hunting, then this bow is definitely worth the look.

The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00CQA91KM” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]OMP Explorer 2.0[/easyazon_link] is not recommended for hunting game due to the low draw weights and because of the high noise it emits while shooting. The main attribute of the bow is that it is very powerful, making it a very solid hunting tool and companion. It comes in the reported draw weight range of 40 to 55 lbs which are not meant for beginners, young people or petite females. Despite the reported draw weights some experts argue that the PSE Mustang packs at least five to ten more pounds that the indicated draw weight. However, there is a tradeoff since it makes more noise than most of the other take-down recurve bows mentioned here. If you ask me, I’d trade power for noise every time.

Pros and Cons of Takedown Recurve Bows

Best Takedown Recurve Bow reviewsObviously, one of the benefits of a takedown bow is the portability that it has in comparison to the one-piece traditional recurve bows. Additionally, when you switch the limbs of recurve bow it is possible to alter the bow’s length as well as its draw length, so beginners might want to take this into consideration because you can simply just buy new limbs instead of investing in an entirely new bow. Moreover, you can also upgrade the bow and add various accessories such as a sight and a stabilizer. Also, the more experience you gain in archery the more you may wish to experiment with different combinations, with a takedown recurve bow you can alter the bow considerably and still avoid the hassle of buying a new bow.

However, for the ease of portability and upgrades, a takedown bow sacrifices efficiency when compared to one piece counterparts. One-piece bows are often lighter and more powerful.

There are pros and cons to both types of recurve bows and some hunters even prefer to have both types of different situations. There is no right or wrong type. In the end, the most important factor to consider is your personal preference since that is what really matters.

Purchasing a Recurve Takedown Bow

One of the things to be wary about when deciding to purchase a bow is the idea that you can and should only buy a bow from a local pro-shop. This is just a myth created by marketers and advertisers. Pro-shops do not offer professional grade bows as opposed to online stores who can only sell standard grade bows. In reality, pro-shops and online stores sell bow lines and sister brands from the same manufacturers. Essentially, manufacturers sell the same versions to both pro-shops and other entities, the only difference is that they call them different names and advertise them under different brands. So when you are searching for a takedown recurve bow, don’t feel compelled to drive to a local pro-shop to get a better bow, you can just as well purchase the same quality online.

Quality vs Price

If you want a premium product, you must be aware of the fact that the most expensive models are often flagship models for a very particular reason. The top of the line bows are often equipped with the latest advances in technology and those advances cost a lot (most directly in the form of patent royalties) resulting in higher bow prices. In the archery industry, unlike many other industries, a high retail price from a trusted manufacturer is indicative of very high quality and performance. When you invest in a high-quality bow, you are investing in a hunting or hobby tool that will last you for a long time since these bows are often very durable and very effective.

Bows have been part of our culture for thousands of years and are heavily featured in the media. If anything, archery has been on the uprise due to increased visibility in media and popularity of medieval reenactments.  Most people associate bows with the traditional design that has been in use for centuries. However, they are unaware of the fact that there are different types of bows, which all have their own advantages and disadvantages.  There are different designs and one of the most popular designs is the recurve bow.

To understand what is a recurve bow it helps to distinguish it from the more traditional alteration. A traditional bow shape employs a simple arc design from one end to another. Recurve bows, on the other hand, have curves that reverse at the end of the limbs, that is to say, both designs have bow limbs that curve toward the archer but recurve bows have a recurve similar to a snake. This design delivers a more powerful and faster shot than a traditional bow with the same amount of draw weight.

How to Choose the Best Recurve Bow for the Money

Whether or not you are a complete beginner or not, there are certain things you must take into account. If you intend to hunt with your bow, then the best hunting recurve bow will be the one with draw weight should not less than 40 pounds. In fact, if you live in the United States certain states will have guidelines and regulation regarding minimum draw weight. Essentially, this is done for the prey. If the draw weight is below 40lbs your arrow may not penetrate the intended target, thus not resulting in a quick kill shot and can cause unneeded suffering of the animal. Regulation on draw weights is an important factor to be considered and there are a few more factors worth mentioning.

1) Draw Weights

Likewise, it is important to realize that a recurve bow differs immensely from a compound bow since you will not have release aids, sights or stabilizers to aid you in achieving precise accuracy. Therefore, selecting the appropriate draw weight is paramount since it is useless to aim for speed when your accuracy is off. Also, if you do not have the appropriate draw weight for your physical stature, it can result in physical strain or even injury. When starting out it might be prudent to purchase a bow that is in the range of 24-30 lbs to practice your technique and skills. Once you have obtained proficiency with a bow in this weight range, a heavier bow could be used in order to shoot further and also perhaps to compete in archery tournaments. In certain instances, you can increase your draw weight with strength training and this is also advised. Nonetheless, it is crucial to find the draw weight that fits your physical profile as an archer and offers enough draw weight to tackle any prey.

Recurve Bow Draw Weight Table:

WeightDraw Weight
Children:
70 – 100 lbs10-15 lbs
100-130 lbs15-25 lbs
130-150 lbs25-35 lbs
Women:100-130 lbs15-25 lbs
130-160 lbs25-35 lbs
160+ lbs30-45 lbs
Men:120-150 lbs30-45 lbs
150-180 lbs40-55 lbs
180+ lbs45-60 lbs

2) Bow Length and Draw Length

Another important factor in selecting the proper bow is the bow length, which should be aligned with your draw length in order to maximize the velocity of the arrow, as well as giving the bow a smoother draw. This is because bow limbs are designed to be used at a certain draw length range. If the draw length is insufficient in comparison to the bow length, you will not be able to flex the limbs of the bow enough to make them energy efficient for your draw. On the other hand, if your bow is not long enough, you risk almost breaking the limbs in half because of the tension.  The best bow length accommodates you so when your arm length has been fully reached you can flex the bow far enough to transfer the power to the arrow while avoiding overstressing the bow and its limbs.

Rule of thumb in choosing the recurve bow’s draw length:

how to choose recurve bow draw lenght

4) To take-down or not to take-down?

If portability is an issue for you as a hunter, you might want to consider a take-down bow since they are essentially three-piece sets that can be taken apart and even upgraded. When you buy a take-down bow, you purchase the riser and the two limbs. The two limbs are attached to the riser and you string the bow. Obviously, transportation of the bow is more convenient with a take-down, nonetheless, some individuals might prefer the simplicity of a traditional recurve bow. If you like upgrading your bow from time to time and if you are also need of a portable bow, well then a take-down is right down your alley.

5) Quality and price

When searching for a quality bow, you must be aware that the more costly models are usually top of the line models from the manufacturer. These bows utilize the newest technology in the field, which has often garnered excellent results in performance tests. Thus, a high retail price is often indicative of the high quality of the bows. Investing in a high-quality bow is definitely worthwhile in the long run when you take into account durability and effectiveness.

Purchasing a Recurve Bow: Pro-shops vs Online Stores

Selecting a recurve bow to purchase may seem a bit daunting especially when you hear myths that you can only purchase a quality recurve bow at a pro-shop. Nothing could be further from the truth. The word pro-shop is just an umbrella term for different shops and stores that sell the same type of bows; the only difference is marketing and branding due to politics. Purchasing a recurve bow online is easy and just as good an option as purchasing one from a pro-shop. In fact, it can be more convenient, you also get to see honest feedback from other customers, and most importantly (!) you receive the same quality product because the most popular archery manufacturers do sell their products online. These manufacturers create the exact same bows as they sell offline for their online brands with the only real difference being the name. So do not be afraid to purchase the recurve bow of your choice online.

Alternatively, you can try and build your own recurve bow.

Hoyt Archery was founded in 1931 and is a leader in archery engineering and innovation.  It was initially a partnership between Earl Hoyt, Sr. and Early Hoyt, Jr. in which they used reinforced plastics to produce bows.  In 1948, they produced the first overdraw bow, and introduced the first semi-anatomic grip on the market.  This anatomic grip has become one of the most popular features of the modern bow world- wide. In 1951, Hoyt used the deflex-reflex design in the production of their recurve bows, and in 1953, they developed the first short recurve hunting bow which was only 52 inches.

Hoyt Technology

hoyt hunting recurve bow reviewsThis company has been first to introduce many leading innovative concepts into the archery market.  When archery was reintroduced to the Olympics as a sport, the Hoyt Pro Medalist recurve bow won the gold medal in the male and female categories.  Hoyt even created a bow for Sylvester Stallone to use in the movie Rambo – First Blood, Part II.

  • Limbs

Technology plays an important part in the production of Hoyt bows.  They have a strict lamination process and rigorous testing standards which make their bows virtually bullet proof.  One of the complaints that people often make about bows is that the limbs break.  After hearing this, the people at Hoyt made sure to build their limbs rock solid, so that they could withstand 1,000 dry-fires. The XTS Pro Arc Limbs are contoured, pre-stressed and laminated with Hoyt’s proprietary 5-layer lamination process which uses Uniform Stress Distribution (USD).  This process gets rid of “hot spots” that are often a problem with lesser quality flat-glass and solid limb designs.

  • Dampening system

Another system that Hoyt uses is a limb dampening system called AirShox.  It eliminates vibration and noise when shooting.  AirShox are not attached to the limbs. This reduces weight on the limbs resulting in more energy.  ARC Limb Technology features high energy storage with recoil-free shooting. The beyond-parallel configuration improves speed and maintains reliability. This technology also eliminates vibration which creates a super smooth and extra quiet shot.  ARC Limb Technology also enhances dynamic cam alignment .

  • Riser

Hoyt’s new Offset Riser Structure which is on the top part of the riser and the widened tunnel on the bottom part greatly increases strength and stiffness of the riser.  Made of aluminum, it is designed to eliminate vibration. It also enables easy tuning, steady aim, and smooth shooting.  In addition, a Pro-Fit Custom Grip system gives the shooter four different grip options to select from, so that comfort is not an issue whether hunting or target shooting.

We have mentioned only a few of the technologies used with Hoyt bows.  There are a number of others which combine to make Hoyt bows the best on the market.

Recurve Hunting Bows by Hoyt

Hoyt considers archery as a way of life, and not just a hobby.  The employees strive to make the best bows in the world without compromise.  They are expert target archers and bowhunters who expect no less than the best from their equipment.  They have goals of tournament victories, record book bucks, and new bow designs, and they continue to be leaders in the archery industry.  Below are two of Hoyt’s traditional recurve bows.

If you maintain your bow properly, it will provide you with years of good usage.  Be sure to use the proper arrow weight, as you can damage a bow by using an arrow that is too light.  Do not expose your bow to extreme weather conditions, and keep it stored properly when it is not in use.

Hoyt Dorado Review

[easyazon_image align=”left” height=”350″ identifier=”B00H491U4U” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/31sfvzPvpjL.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”150″][easyazon_link identifier=”B00H491U4U” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]The Dorado[/easyazon_link] is a classic traditional bow designed for the ultimate pursuits.  The limbs are custom wood core and the bow length is 60 inches.  Mass weight is 2.5 pounds, and draw weight is 35 to 65.  The length of the riser is 19 inches and brace height is 7-8 inches.  This bow also comes with a compact carrying case for easy portability.

You should always use a bowstringer when stringing or unstringing a recurve bow, otherwise you can be seriously injured. In addition, you should never draw or shoot a bow if the bow string is damaged.  It is not difficult to maintain this bow.  Use a light protective coat of oil on the limb bolts only occasionally.  Wood core limbs are more susceptible to moisture if the protective finish is damaged in any way.  You can use clear nail polish or automotive touch-up paint which will help re-seal the wood.

A bow quiver is a container that holds bolts, darts, or arrows and bow accessories.  Depending on what the archer prefers, a quiver can be attached to the bow, the ground, or to the body.  Materials used to make quivers were traditionally furs, wood, and leather.  Modern day quivers are generally made of plastic or metal. In the medieval days, quivers were simple arrow bags made from a cloth sack with a drawstring.  A leather spacer was used at the top of the bag to separate the arrows.  These were put on the ground or tucked into a belt, and some had rope or straps sewn on to make them easier to carry.

Main Types of Bow Quivers

Best quiver: here are several types of quivers, the most common being the belt style.  The belt quiver is usually shaped like a cylinder or flat and hangs from the belt. The way the quiver is worn varies.  It can be tilted forward or backward, or worn in the small of the back.  It can also be worn on the off-hand side or the dominant side.  Some styles are just small pouches that cover the first few inches of the arrow, while other styles cover the whole arrow.

Bow quiver: another type of quiver is the bow quiver which is attached to the limbs of the bow and uses a clip to hold the arrow steady.  Compound bow hunters tend to like this type of quiver because it enables them to carry just one piece of equipment, and it does not get in the way.

Back quivers: these quivers are worn on the shooter’s back and attached with straps.  With this quiver, the archer can rapidly draw the arrow over the shoulder because the nock ends stand up over the shoulder of the dominant hand.

Ground quiver: if you are going to be in one spot shooting, then a ground quiver is a good option.  These are usually some type of pole in the ground with something on top to hold the arrows within the archer’s reach.  Japanese quivers are another type used mainly to carry and protect the arrows. Quivers are a matter of preference, and they make it convenient for the archer.

If you’ve been looking to start hunting, or you’ve been trying to get into the hobby of shooting bows, you may have been looking at recurve bows. A recurve bow is, in short, a very powerful bow that can be adjusted to assist with different tasks. In recent years, it has become popular because of its use in The Hunger Games. Here are some tips that you can use if you’re learning how to shoot a recurve bow for the first time.

  • Make sure that your stance is correct.

Your stance is incredibly important, because it will determine exactly where your arrow is going to go. Stand perpendicular to the target, with the hip that is opposite of your dominant hand facing the target. Be centered as best as you can, and keep your feet shoulder width apart. Turn your head, and not the rest of your body, toward the target to keep it straight, and hold the bow as comfortably as you can. Not too rigid, but not too loose, either. Make sure you have a good grip on it before you even start to load your arrow.

  • Draw the bow as fully as possible.

Loading the arrow, also referred to as “knocking” your arrow, means that you need to put the end of your arrow onto the string. It usually clicks on, depending on the arrows that you have. Always load the arrow pointing toward the ground. Then, turn your arms so that your shoulder and the bow are parallel to your body, keeping that same grip. Keep the elbow of your bow arm as straight as you can so that you don’t have to worry about hurting yourself while shooting. Then, you will want to use your eye (or a sight) to line up the target as best as you can.

  • Shoot the arrow.

Shooting the arrow should happen in one fluid motion. All you have to do is relax your fingers – don’t jerk, don’t pull, just gently let them fall off of the strong. Then, the arrow will fly through the air toward your target. Do not move until the arrow stops moving. The slightest bit of motion could cause the arrow to fly off of its course. Just stand in position until the arrow hits its intended target, and then slowly pull your bow down so it’s facing the ground again.

It sounds simple, but it takes a lot of practice to be able to get it just right. There are so many little things that you have to pay attention to, and if you don’t have any experience with it, it may take you a few tries to be able to get the whole thing down pat. If you want to make sure that you get the most out of shooting your recurve bow, work with a professional that can give you tips and teach you while you’re actually holding the bow. Good luck and have fun shooting your bow!

A recurve bow is a unique type of bow that helps you to shoot arrows further than your standard bow. It is actually easier than ever to put together your own recurve bow that you can use yourself, but it will take some time and practice to be able to get one together that works the way that you want it to work. Here are some tips that you can use in order to put together your own recurve bow for personal use.

  • Make sure that you use a wood that is flexible, but strong. Lemonwood, maple, yew, and hickory are all types of wood that work well for curve bows. You will want to make a stave (or purchase one) made out of one of these types of wood.
  • When you’re whittling down the wood so that it’s the right size and shape, make sure that you make it thick enough to stand up to the pressure of the string, while at the same time ensuring that the rough parts of the wood are sanded down so to prevent splinters. If you make the bow too thin, it’s going to snap after just a few uses, or in the worst cases, after you get the string taut.
  • Shaping the bow is, perhaps, the most difficult part of the process. Find a pattern that you can use if you’re doing it for the first time. Take some time to see exactly how you want to put it together and make a design that is going to be easy for you to hold, while at the same time making sure that you make it even.
  • The measurements that you make have to be precise, or you’re going to see issues when it comes to putting the bow together. Everything has to be very even so that the string doesn’t bend oddly when you pull it back. Make sure that you’re within millimeters when it comes to evenness, or you may have to start over.
  • Then, it’s time for you to string it. Put notches on the bottom and top parts of your bow, and then make sure that they’re evenly distributed and can fit the loop of the string(s) that you’re planning on using. Then, use the technique that we described previously to string your bow

An important note: Make sure that you test the bow before you go out and use it. Make sure that the string isn’t loose and that the wood is strong, or you may start to have some problems when it comes to shooting it.

Obviously, this is going to take some practice, and you may end up with a few failures before you get a recurve bow that you like. With some practice and tutorials, you can put together a recurve bow that meets your needs while at the same time putting your skills to the test. Check out the resources below in order to learn more of the fine details related to building your own recurve bow.

When you own a bow, you want to do everything that you can in order to make sure that it stays in the best condition possible. It’s sometimes pricey to replace parts, and it can be difficult to make sure that you get the right ones for what you need. That being said, you usually have to take the string off of your recurve bow before you put it away so that it stays in good condition. Taking the string off is simple enough; but how do you put the string back on? Or, how do you first put a string on the new recurve bow that you’ve built or bought? Here are some tips.

  • There are two main tips to your bow, the lower one and the upper one. When you look at your bow, you will notice that each of them have a slot where you can set the string, and your string will have a loop that you can utilize in order to put it on the bow. Make sure that your bow is right side up so that you aren’t stringing it upside down. It should be clear which side is up.
  • Start with the lower tip of your bow, and slip the string on it, while holding the other loop on the string in your dominant hand.
  • At that point, you’ll want to grab on the upper tip of your bow with your dominant hand, while still holding the loop in that hand as well. You want to have a firm grip on both at this point so that you don’t have any problems with it.
  • Lay the lower tip on the outer part of the foot that is opposite your dominant hand. Make sure that it’s firm on there and doesn’t move around.
  • Step through the bow with your dominant leg, pushing on the curve of the bow with your thigh to hold it tight so when you string it, you don’t have an issue with it. Be gentle, however, because you need to make sure that you don’t break the bow while you’re stringing it. Push on the bow enough so that you can loop the string over it.
  • After you’ve strung the bow, gently release your thigh from it so that the string can tense up without snapping.
  • Test it out by pulling the string back without having an arrow knocked. That way, you can make sure that there isn’t any wear and tear going on with the string before you actually use it to shoot with.

Stringing your recurve bow may feel a little difficult at first, but as time goes on, it becomes a lot easier after you’ve practiced for a bit. By knowing how to string your bow, you’re in a much better position to take care of it properly and you’ll have a much better chance of having that bow for a long period of time. If you need some hands on experience, work with a pro to see how it works first hand.

Another and easier way to string a bow is to use a simple (and cheap) stringer, like this one, and follows the steps as in this video:

OMP Mountaineer 2.0 Review:

October Mountaineer Products Mountaineer 2.0 is traditionally inspired and developed to deliver an excellent performance. It is a Cadillac of hunting bows but it’s not costlier than Chevy Cruze. It offers a light-weight structure, while at the same time it’s developed to withstand all rigors of the hunt. Archers at all skill levels will be thrilled with Mountaineer’s solid performance. With this 3 piece wonderful Takedown Recurve Bow, you can go to hunt down an elk, deer or even a black bear. The Mountaineer weighs around 3.5 pounds and you can easily carry it around for hours. The bow is super silent and does not produce noticeable vibration either.

OMP Mountaineer is an awesome bow of 62 inches available for right- and left-handed shooters with 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55 pounds draw weights. It contains a slim-grip riser made of Walnut, Oak and laminated hard Maple and is designed to fit most shooters. The bow includes a set of both standard and tool-less limb-bolts that are used to assemble it. Sight, Plunger and Stabilizer Bushings are provided with the Mountaineer but the bow stringer does not come in package. You need to buy it separately before moving on hunting expedition.

PROS:

  1. Mountaineer has solid performance and rugged design.
  2. It has a fantastic price offering value for it.
  3. Dacron String and Dacron Flemish Twist String both are included.
  4. It produces less sound during hunting.

 CONS:

  1. Bow Stringer is not included in the package.

PSE Blackhawk Review:

Precision Shooting Equipment Archery’s Blackhawk Recurve Bow is a one piece traditional bow and it’s suitable for beginners and those want to polish their archery skills. It delivers authentic performance in hunting activity for right hand archers. Hard laminated Maple and Walnut is used in construction and the limbs are covered in clear fiberglass to
protect the bow. Riser is large, beautiful, and durable and comes with a crowned shelf, perfect for instinctive shooting. The laminated hardwood of riser serves a great job of dispensing vibrations during the shot. The limbs are sound and excellent in performance.

Blackhawk is born to hunt and the bow at maximum draw weight of 50 pounds will work well to hunt game the size of elk and deer. Dacron B50 string can be used consistently for years and it is included with the bow package. Blackhawk comes without a sight or stabilizer, which again makes it a great chose for those who prefer instinctive shooting.

PROS:

  • Blackhawk needs no assembling being one-piece construction.
  • Awesome structure and durable limbs make it a great hunting device.

CONS:

  • Blackhawk is not a take-down bow and sight and stabilizer are not included in it.
