It is quite clear that hunting can be a very thrilling sport. A very common spot is the “bow hunting”. Bow hunting has a very long list of gear that can be used to optimize hunting experience. Quality of the gear creates a fine line between the margins of success and failure. There is no fun in constantly being unable to hit a single deer.

It is not uncommon to find a lot of substandard products in the market. If you would be using a compound bow or recurve bow, you would have to take note of the gear you use. Those bows may be easy to shoot but a broadhead can easily make you miss your target. Despite the lack of quality, there are still some very good broadheads in the market. A good broadhead means you can shoot more deer. The next step is identifying them and choosing them.

It is good that you make a good choice of broadheads before your next hunt. Picking a good broadhead may take some time on the part of the article. This article is designed to give detailed information on the top broadheads in the market.

Factors to consider in choosing the best broadheads for deer hunting

Durability – The broadhead is going to be used in hunting and needs to be of a certain degree of durability. No hunter will want to purchase a broadhead which can only be used to kill one prey and is then disposed. The broadhead also needs to be durable enough to constantly penetrate deeply into the skin and bone of prey.

Reliability – As a hunter, the last thing you would want is for your gear to fail to function. It is not uncommon to find broadheads which fail to open up before hitting their target, making the shot a miserable one. This makes it important that any broadhead of choice should be capable of producing different accurate and lethal shots on the target.

Bow Energy: Different bows are compatible with different broadhead types. Some broadheads may seem too heavy or too light when used with certain bows. This means that in choosing a broadhead, consider if the broadhead will be able to be shot with enough energy from your bow. Anything other than that will be a waste of time and resources.

Game Weight: You have to make your broadhead choice, considering the type of and its size. Certain broadheads will prove ineffective for bringing down heavy game. Using those types will only lead to non – lethal shots allowing the animal escape.

Range and Terrain: The range and terrain which you would be hunting on would determine the type of broadhead to use. The type of terrain for hunting sometimes affects how close the hunter can get to the target before making a shot. Choose a broadhead that is effective enough to cover that range and provide lethal performance.

Expandable Broadhead Buying Guide

Here are the important characteristics to look at when shopping for mechanical (expandable) broadhead arrow tips:

  • Type of bow best used with

Most arrows with broadheads are universal and they can be used in either crossbows or compound bows as long as they are cut to the right length. There are always exceptions to this rule so make sure each broadhead type you are thinking about buying fits onto arrows that can be used in your bow of choice.

Check the expandable broadhead collar size on any mechanical broadheads you are thinking about buying too. Some of these collars are too big to use with certain model bows and crossbows.

  • Entry wound size

Without being too gross here you want your mechanical broadhead to hit hard and then expand and do maximum damage to the game it enters. That means the more the blood gushes out of it the better the knock down capability a broadhead has. Thus it becomes important to know what size your mechanical broadhead expands to upon impact. Most hunters prefer an expandable broadhead that makes a 1 ½” inch or bigger entry wound upon impact.

  • Bow draw weight required to expand the broadhead properly on contact

Each mechanical broadhead you are thinking about purchasing should say on the package or description what size bow draw weight it takes to make it work properly upon impact. It is very important that the compound bow or crossbow you use meet this requirement or your mechanical broadhead model most likely will not expand and do damage upon impact.

  • Dependability

Another factor of any type of mechanical broadhead that you are thinking about buying that you need to be keenly aware of is its dependability. That means what percentage of the time it opens correctly upon impact. This information is sometimes provided by the manufacturer but you may have to look at some customer reviews to determine this too. You certainly don’t want to hunt with a mechanical broadhead that fails to expand on impact a large percentage of the time.

  • Durability

Even though expandable broadhead tipped arrows tend to fly straighter than regular broadhead tipped arrows you are still not going to hit your target every time you shoot. When you miss you don’t want your mechanical broadheads disintegrating on impact every time. Although you will get the occasional broken expandable broadhead tip you should look for a mechanical broadhead tip that has a reputation for not being extremely fragile when impacting solid objects.

Expandable Broadheads Reviews: 5 High-Value Models

[easyazon_image align=”center” height=”500″ identifier=”B00K0LJZGE” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/31SWHC9vNLL-1.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”368″]

 [easyazon_link identifier=”B00K0LJZGE” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″] Swhacker 100 Grain 1.75-Inch Cut Broadhead [/easyazon_link]

These broadheads are said to open so fast you can hear the ‘swhack’ in their name when they hit. That is exactly the type of mechanical broadhead action you need on any of these tips you are looking to buy.

This model expanding broadhead will create a nice 1 ¾” entry wound on impact. That is enough to quickly bleed out a large animal if struck right. The carbon steel point has little effect on your arrow in flight and when it impacts and opens two razor sharp blades quickly pop out.

Even the ferrule on these broadheads is well constructed thanks to being made out of anodized aircraft aluminum. These model tips are affordably priced and have a reputation for being extremely reliable. It’s hard to find anything not to like about them.

Pros:

  • Rapid expanding upon impact
  • Hardened carbon steel point
  • Anodized aluminum ferrule
  • 75” entry wound size
  • 100 grain 2 blade broadhead tip
  • Razor edged stainless steel expansion blades

Cons:

  • No practice tip version

 [easyazon_link identifier=”B00K0LJU3C” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″] Swhacker Set of 3 Crossbow 100 Grain 1.75 Inch Cut Broadhead [/easyazon_link]

When your top two products on a best review list are made by the same manufacturer that speaks volumes as to how well their products work. That is exactly the case here as this is another fine expandable broadhead product from Swhacker. It is very similar to item number one except it is specifically designed to be used with a crossbow.

This is another quick deploying mass damage type broadhead. It will rapidly jut out two 1 ¾” stainless steel blades on impact. Since the expanding blades do not come out until impact they have no effect on your arrows flight.

These come nicely packaged in a 3 broadhead tip set.

Pros:

  • Crossbow use only
  • Quick deploying on impact
  • 75” entry wound size
  • Carbon steel point
  • Anodized Aluminum ferrule
  • 2 stainless steel expansion blades

Cons:

  • Can only be used with crossbows
  • No included practice tips

 [easyazon_link identifier=”B01LW4INIF” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″] Visionary Outdoors Precision Hunting Rear Expandable Broadheads [/easyazon_link]

This is a very interesting expandable broadhead design from visionary outdoor products. These broadhead tips actually deploy like normal broadheads do but have an additional part of the razor expanding tip that actually faces forward too.

When these broadheads impact they immediately expand to over 2 inches in length. That often results in the game you hit leaving huge blood trails to follow. They are solidly built and perfect for taking down both large and medium size game animals.

These broadhead tips come in a six pack and are backed up by a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Pros:

  • Unique rear expanding broadheads
  • 100% satisfaction guarantee
  • Very dependable
  • Designed to create vivid blood trails
  • 100 grain broadheads
  • Added shock collar technology

Cons:

  • Do not work with wooden arrows
  • Rubber O-ring wear these mount to the shaft

 [easyazon_link identifier=”B00AU6DEB6″ locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″] Rage – Hypodermic [/easyazon_link]

Here is a 100 grain mechanical broadhead that slices with the precision of a surgical tool when it expands after impacting the game you shoot with it. Rage has come up with a very nice design with this model expanding broadhead arrow tip.

These mechanical broadhead tips are said by those that use them to be very accurate when shot thanks to the single piece hybrid tip design. They will cause a 2” wound upon impact and the improved shock collar technology in them helps make them very reliable too.

It even comes with a free practice head so you can get a good feel for how these mechanical broadheads fly before taking a more critical shot in the field.

Pros:

  • Includes free practice head
  • 2” wound diameter
  • Accurate hybrid tip
  • Shock collar technology
  • Penetrates deep
  • Aerodynamic steel ferrule

Cons:

  • Recommend use with a heavy arrow for better penetration
  • These tips are smaller than expected
  • Bow only use

[easyazon_cta align=”center” identifier=”B00AU6DEB6″ key=”wide-light” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]

[easyazon_image align=”center” height=”214″ identifier=”B0197DARSU” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/41EEndVNvxL.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”500″]

 [easyazon_link identifier=”B0197DARSU” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″] Rage Hypodermic Crossbow Broadhead [/easyazon_link]

This is the crossbow only version of the product we just reviewed in item number four on our top review list but it’s every bit as good as the bow version of this mechanical broadhead. It too is known for being both accurate and lethal when striking your intended game.

This is a mechanical broadhead product that hits hard and produces a sizeable blood trail after doing so. The increased leading edge size is what helps open up an entry wound over 2 inches in size. Those who use these mechanical broadheads often note how reliable they are also.

As with most broadhead products from rage this package also includes practice tips so you can hone your skills with them before going out into the field for the game.

Pros:

  • Designed specifically for crossbow use
  • Oversized leading edge blade
  • Design promotes aerodynamic flight
  • Creates a 2” entry wound
  • Includes practice heads
  • Extremely reliable

Cons:

  • Only for crossbow use
  • Does not have shock collar technology like the bow version

[easyazon_cta align=”center” identifier=”B0197DARSU” key=”wide-light” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]

Conclusion

Whether you hunt using a bow or crossbow you have many excellent mechanical broadhead tips to choose from on our top review list. It makes it tough for us to recommend one of them over the other.  If we had to choose one to highly recommend it would have to be the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00K0LJZGE” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Swhacker 100 Grain 1.75-Inch Cut Broadhead[/easyazon_link].

These mechanical broadheads expand rapidly on impact to create a sizeable 1 ¾ inch entry wound. The razor sharp edges on them do maximum damage when entering a game animal and promote rapid blood loss for an easy to follow the blood trail. These arrows are also very accurate due to their aerodynamic carbon steel tip design and the ferrule is made out of high-grade anodized aircraft aluminum.

As was mentioned in the review it really was hard for those that used these mechanical broadheads to find anything they did not like about them. You really should check them out further before making your final expandable broadhead purchase. They really are one of the best expandable broadheads you can buy.

Advice for Beginners When Choosing Arrows to Buy For Your Compound Bow

It would take an article about 100 times the size of this one to explain all there is too know about choosing arrows for your compound bow to hunt with. There is just a lot that goes into it and it will take a long time to learn all about that.

Here are a few beginners’ tips to keep in mind when selecting a hunting arrow to use with your compound bow.

  1. Safety is the most important thing

Using the wrong arrow will not only make it hard to take down your intended game it can also cause serious injury. Some arrows are simply not strong enough to be used with more powerful compound bows.

Other dangerous conditions can arise if the spine rating of your arrow does not match the spine rating on your bow.

An arrow that is too short can also cause serious injury. You never want your arrow to be shorter than the draw length on your bow. Anything you gain from that extra loss in weight will never be worth piercing a body part with an arrow that snapped in half because it was drawn back too far.

  1. Ask the experts

We just told you that there is so much to know and learn to get arrow selection right. There is no shame in going to see an archery expert to have them help you pick out arrows. It’s no different than having someone fix the brakes on your car even though you know where they are. I am pretty sure you are better at your job than people who do not do it all the time.

Don’t go see them blind either. If at all possible bring your bow with you. At the very least you will have to give them very specific information about your bow if you don’t have it with you. They will need to know such things as what model bow it is, what the draw weight is on it and what the length of the draw itself is too.

  1. Don’t buy arrows in huge quantities

It’s true. There are some great buys on arrows in bulk in the sports marketplace but resist the temptation. Buy your arrows in lots of six if possible. When you get them insert some target tips in them and practice shooting them. That way if the arrows are not to your liking you can switch to different ones. This will help keep your investment to a minimum until you find the arrows that are just right for you.

 [easyazon_link identifier=”B00AU6ED2U” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″] Carbon Express Maxima RED Fletched Carbon Arrows [/easyazon_link]

This is a very popular arrow for a reason. It tends to hit hard and fly true. Hunters rave about the results they get when using this model arrow from carbon express.

These arrows are specially designed to control dynamic spine. It is what gives them their edge in accuracy. The manufacturer accomplishes this by making the ends stiffer so they don’t flex as much during flight.

Tight quality control plays a big part in how well this arrow flies too. No arrow leaves the factory unless it meets their strict standard of being within 1/10,000 of an inch for straightness.

This is also a very durable arrow. That is another edge carbon arrows give you. They are not unbreakable but they will last longer than just about any other type of arrow. These come sold in packs of six and can be bought in 250 or 350 spine styles.

Pros:

  • Better dynamic spine management
  • Made of high tech carbon material
  • Quality checked for straightness (1/10,000 of an inch)
  • Stiffer end reduces flexing

Cons:

  • Not all broadheads work well with them
  • Small inconsistency in weight between arrows

WHY USE A STRING SILENCER ON YOUR BOW?

It’s no secret that as today’s bows get more technologically advanced they also create more noise when you are drawing them back and as you release the arrow. That has put a premium on effective string silencers. Here are some things that can result from having bow strings that are properly silenced.

  1. Cuts Down On Missed Opportunities

If you have hunted for a long time you know there is no such thing as a stupid animal. Deer, turkey and other game animals have an incredible sense of hearing. The least little sound as you are preparing for a shot may spook them away. It can be very frustrating to wait out your game for a whole day only to miss a shot opportunity because you have a noisy bow.

  1. Less Wounded Animals

Many people hunt because it is thrilling to successfully outwit your preferred game and bag it. For most hunters there is a flipside too and that is the sick feeling from not getting a clean kill shot and seeing an animal flee in agony. Noisy strings on bows can be a huge factor in spooking your game so they start to move just as you are taking a shot. This often times results in you hitting the animal other than where you intended to.

  1. Lessens Vibration

Many people do not realize that most string silencers also cut down on the vibration as you shoot your bow. This makes them much more comfortable to hold them when shooting. Less vibration will also help your bow stay sighted in properly for a longer period of time too

  1. May Increase Arrow Speed

Some companies say that you can actually increase your arrow speed slightly if you have string silencers attached to your bow. It’s not a whole lot, maybe as little as 1 to 3 feet per second. But if you are going after large game every bit of penetrating power counts.

Once you have decided on which type of string silencer you want to add to your bow or crossbow, next check out this handy YouTube video on how to install them properly:

A compound bow release for a while now has been an essential and absolutely necessary item for almost any archer to achieve accurate and precision shooting results. From the standpoint of a beginner, it can be quite difficult to decide which type of compound bow release is the most beneficial. Many experts and seasoned compound bow users alike swear by one type or another, but it can be confusing to decide which type of compound bow release is right for you. If you are indeed considering a compound bow release, as you should, take a minute, and familiarize yourself with the four basic types: the caliper release, the back tension or hinge release, the thumb release and finally the simple finger release. Mastering each can take time, but with a little knowledge you can start your search off on the right foot.

1. The Caliper Release

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”66″ identifier=”B000KKD3G8″ locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/31LEABkaNZL.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”150″]PROS:
Simple & Easy – A caliper or “jaw” releases the string when the trigger is pulled.
Affordable – Caliper releases are generally more affordable for beginners.
Adjustable Trigger Tension – Higher quality brands allow for tension adjustment.
Hunting – Popular with bow hunters for its ease of use.
CONS:
Anticipation – Triggers can cause anticipation and flinch in beginners.
Form – Trigger releases can cause problems in pulling form.
Target Panic – Reported as a more common occurrence with caliper releases.
Anchor Variability – The consistency of the wrist strap affects your anchor point.

2. The Back Tension Release

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”150″ identifier=”B0052B3ZKO” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/41eBCyx1YTL.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”150″]PROS:
Form – The design forces archers to use correct form.
Aiming – Lack of trigger allows you to focus on your aim and not the release.
Anticipation – Reduced flinch as form improves. Considered the most natural.
CONS:
Learning Curve – Requires more practice than a caliper release.
Price – Can be more expensive than caliper releases. Think crème de la crème.
Premature Release – Can occur easily if untrained.

3. The Thumb Release

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”150″ identifier=”B004TNBEX6″ locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/41O3gjjes5L.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”150″]PROS:
Functionality – Basically the same premise as index finger release.
Target Panic – Archers report an easier time conquering target panic.
Anticipation – Reduced flinch, as the thumb trip is more natural with good form.
Comfort – Easier to anchor.
CONS:
Price – Can be more expensive than its index finger cousin.
Learning Curve – More difficult than index finger triggers.

4. The Finger Release

finger releasePROS:
Price – No extra money required.
Traditional – Traditionalist swear by it.
CONS:
Time – To become good at the finger release requires lots of time.
Error – The hardest to master, and the most room for error.

Nerve Damage – Potential long-term use can cause nerve damage in fingers.

In summary, let me remind you that each release comes with its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages, and finding the best bow release for you may require a little experimentation based on your current experience level. Many stores allow customers to try the different releases at indoor target areas, and of course, nothing is as quick and simple as a trip with your bow to your own backyard target. Shooting a friend’s release that he or she happens to prefer is also a great way to get your feet wet while saving you money. Research each type, and be opened minded to trying them all, and it’s a guarantee you’ll discover one that makes your bow sing.

Archery is all about confidence. Confidence must extend not only to your ability but to your equipment as well. For some archers, this means traditional equipment. For others it means a compound all decked out. When it comes to compound bows, there are several decisions everyone has to make. Choosing what accessories mount on their shooting rig constitute some of those choices. One choice every compound archer faces is what arrow rest they trust at the moment of truth. If you prefer a rest that provides zero impact on arrow flight, you might take a closer look at the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00HGY84RY” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]G5 CMAX drop away arrow rest[/easyazon_link].

Things to consider before buying an arrow rest

Before buying any arrow rest it is important to answer a few important questions. For starters, do you favor gear with few moving parts, or does high-tech gear whet your appetite? If you prefer to keep it simple, a capture rest, like a [easyazon_link identifier=”B004MPFBFS” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]whisker biscuit[/easyazon_link], may be up your alley. However, if added complexity doesn’t scare you away from a drop away rest may be a good fit. Drop away rests offer one great advantage. Upon release of the bow string, there is zero contact between the rest and the arrow since the rest “drops away”. This is believed to improve accuracy by some. Some of the most accomplished archers, including Randy Ulmer, choose drop away rests for this advantage.

The second major factor you will likely take into account with your next arrow rest purchase is the cost of the item. When browsing a lineup of arrow rests the drop away variety typically costs noticeably more than containment rests. If you want the most advanced engineering out there, you generally have to pay for it, no matter your purchase. For some, the added cost may outweigh potential gains. Others will gladly cough up the extra cash if it equals added confidence when it matters most.

G5 Arrow Rest  – State of The Art Arrow Rest

[easyazon_image align=”center” height=”500″ identifier=”B00HGY84RY” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/41yy5jqdklL-1.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”500″]

That being said, if you are looking for a state of the art arrow rest, and don’t mind paying a little more, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00HGY84RY” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]G5 CMAX[/easyazon_link] drop away arrow rest may be for you. G5 introduced this cutting-edge arrow rest in 2014 and it has been endorsed by well-known hunters such as Michael Waddell. The CMAX is touted by G5 to be one of the most durable drop away rests on the market. One test performed by the G5 staff highlighted this claim by successfully cycling one CMAX rest over 1 million times without fail. G5 also promotes this product as “virtually silent in the field.” Most seasoned bowhunters realize how even slight noises at bowhunting ranges can spook skittish animals of all kinds. Now in its third year of production, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00HGY84RY” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]G5 CMAX[/easyazon_link] is still an eye-catching drop away arrow rest for many reasons. Here are some of the most prominent features and benefits:

Full Containment Drop Away Design

While the G5 CMAX has several features that appeal to a variety of shooters, one is the full containment drop away design. In the past, many of the old drop away rests would simply lift the arrow off the shelf using a prong design [easyazon_link identifier=”B010MXAQIU” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]SAS Drop Away Arrow Rest Right Hand[/easyazon_link]. When the bowstring was pulled back the ripcord would elevate the prong and thus elevate the arrow as well. Upon the release of the bowstring, the arrow would fly straight while the rest dropped away. These old rests had a major drawback, however. If you did a lot of spot and stalk hunting, such as myself, your arrow had a tendency to bounce off the rest and cause some real frustration. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00TP8RBV4″ locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]G5 CMAX[/easyazon_link] tried to address that issue with their design.

The CMAX was engineered to be a full containment drop away rest. When you push the G5 button on the rest, a launcher arm lifts up the arrow. The launcher arm is the component in the center of the rest that really pops out in photos you see. With the launcher arm engaged your arrow is now fully captured between the top arm of the arrow rest and the launcher arm. You can watch Michael Waddell showcase this feature in this brief G5 commercial. With this rest, you get the best of both worlds. You get the zero contact arrow flight a drop away rest provides as well as the certainty of a capture rest. It is one of the features that makes this rest so appealing.

Easy Installation

Another advantage this arrow rest has is the ease of setting it up. Many other types of drop away rests require tying your drop cord during installation and quite a bit of time. This isn’t a huge hurdle, but for it can take some practice, or a bowpress, to get done. The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00HGY84RY” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]G5 CMAX is different[/easyazon_link]. In less than 10 minutes can you take this rest out of the box and have it mounted on your bow ready for fine tuning. G5 put out a great video describing the installation process. A basic Allen wrench, simple cutting tool, and lighter are the only tools you need. It is important to note installing this rest is easy, but paying attention to the details is important.

The number one complaint against the G5 CMAX seems to be that it will not consistently drop away like it is supposed to. This causes disastrous misses and can cause arrow damage as well. However, folks that have installed this rest properly, and retune it once the drop cord has stretched in, have very good things to say about it. As mentioned earlier, drop away rests to have the added benefit of zero arrow contact upon release, but the trade-off is added complexity. Complexity requires a watchful eye and more tuning to achieve the desired results. If tinkering with your bow isn’t up your alley, the CMAX may not be either. On the other hand, if you have a keen eye for details, and don’t mind fiddling with your bow it has the potential to be an awfully good option.

Limb Driven

The second design feature you may find appealing of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00HGY84RY” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]CMAX[/easyazon_link] is the limb driven nature of the rest. When comparing drop away arrow rests you’ll soon notice three different groups; cable driven rests, inertia driven rests, and limb driven rests. The basic difference between these groups is how they are triggered. With a cable driven rest, the drop cord is tied into the bow cable. When the bow is drawn the cable moves and the rest kicks into action. On the other hand, limb driven systems, like the CMAX, are attached to the limbs of the bow. As the limb flexes when the bow is drawn, the rest is triggered. One advantage a limb driven bow offers is increased time on the rest before falling away. This is believed by some to increase the accuracy of the rest, as the arrow will be at a faster speed and have a more definite trajectory before being turned loose. While to my knowledge the idea has never been put to the test, the basic concept seems to make sense.

Durability

The final aspect of the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00HGY84RY” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]G5 CMAX drop away arrow rest[/easyazon_link] that deserves added attention is the durability this rest has proven to provide. As mentioned earlier, G5 tested one of their rests with over one million test pulls. Why? So they could honestly advertise their product as the most durable on the market. It appears the folks at G5 realize the added complexity of a drop away rest discourages some people away from using them. If they can show potential buyers the rest can perform over one million uses, perhaps it not only allows them to advertise honestly but to attract those leery of the product as well. With this type of proven longevity, it’s likely your bow will give out before your arrow rest does.

Social Proof

After reviewing many many comments preparing this review it seems like folks who follow the installation process correctly have some good things to say.  One positive review points to the fact the CMAX is a great rest, but that there is some stretch in time for the drop cord. Another member of a popular archery discussion board seems to have nothing but good things to say about this rest.

When you spend some time looking at the reviews it seems a good deal of folks has really been impressed by this full containment drop away rest. Not only does it function properly, but appears to meet its advertised claims.

Alternatives

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”119″ identifier=”B003DQXQZY” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/31SoPjePM8L.SL160.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”160″]If you are still not impressed, but still find the drop away rest appealing, there are a few other options on the market as well. One option that seems to be popular is the [easyazon_link identifier=”B003DQXQZY” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Ripcord Code Red Drop-Away Arrow rest[/easyazon_link].  This rest although similar to the CMAX has a few key differences. For starters, it is a cable driven arrow rest. This will require a little more know-how during the installation process, but that doesn’t scare folks away from it. Like the G5 CMAX, the Ripcord Code Red is a full containment rest but is a fall away rest rather than a drop away rest. That means it will fall in the direction the arrow is traveling rather than straight down like the CMAX. This video shows the Ripcord Code Red in slow motion action.

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”115″ identifier=”B0052B1OE8″ locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/41FxZyTcrJL.SL160.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”160″]Another drop away arrow rest you might find appealing is the [easyazon_link identifier=”B0052B1OE8″ locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Vapor Trail LimbDriver Pro V[/easyazon_link]. Like the name indicates, this Vapor Trail arrow rest is attached to the limb similarly to the G5 CMAX. The folks at Vapor Trail also advertise this rest requiring simple and fast installation. One feature the Pro V doesn’t offer is the full containment attribute. As you can see in the Pro V photo there is a large opening at the top of the rest through which you load the arrow. While it is not a full containment arrow rest it may still offer enough containment for some shooters out there. It appears you would have to hold your bow at some serious angles to tip your arrow out of this Vapor Trail rest.

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”107″ identifier=”B00I8T9S80″ locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/41yeDaS9XvL.SL160.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”160″]Finally, if you’ve scanned through the various drop away arrow rests out there, and still aren’t convinced about the high-tech nature of the these devices, a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00I8T9S80″ locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Whisker Biscuit[/easyazon_link] may be your cup of tea. These simple full containment rests are appealing to some folks for a number of reasons. One, they generally retail for a bit less than drop away rests. Secondly, once your arrow is seated in the biscuit it simply won’t wiggle around or fall off. Even with a full containment rest like the CMAX, the arrow still has room to bounce around, though it won’t fall off. On the downside, a Whisker Biscuit does cause significant contact on the arrow fletchings as they pass through. While some believe this significantly causes altered arrow flight, others don’t seem to notice the effects.

Conclusion

Again, every archer faces the same problem when setting up their shooting rig. It is paramount they build a bow that gives them the confidence they need when crunch time hits. If an arrow rest that allows for unaltered arrow flight, fully contains the arrow and has proven itself worthy after one million shots sounds like a confidence booster the G5 CMAX drop away arrow rest may be a good fit for you.

A bow release is an aid to help archers shoot their arrows more accurately and obtain a smoother release.  It is a mechanical aid which helps you get a clean shot by reducing movement and increasing your performance.  When using a release, there is only one point of contact instead of three fingers touching the string.  There are various types of releases which include wrist and handheld models.  Bow releases have become so popular that it is good to have a backup release because it is easy to lose it or to inadvertently drop or damage it, especially if it is not around your wrist. It is often harder to draw back a bow with a handheld release versus a wrist model.  Wrist models are generally preferred and easier  because the draw weight is distributed around the wrist, resulting in less effort during the draw cycle than with a handheld.

Below are some of the best compound bow releases on the market:

Compound bow sights are essential for seeing clearly when you are shooting at a target.  Compound bows are capable of shooting at great speed, so it is important that the target is in clear view.  Bow sights are mounted on the riser of the bow and help you aim the arrow. Instinctive shooting, which is shooting without a sight is possible, but more difficult especially at longer distances.  Most compound bows today have some type of sight. Basic sights are often made of adjustable pins in a plastic mounting.  The pins can be moved around to adjust elevation.

Main Types of Compound Bow Sights

Advanced compound bow sights can be more sophisticated. These are generally made of a material that is more durable like machined aluminum, featuring several adjustable pins, along with other features like sight housing, fiber optics, aiming rings, vibration dampeners, and more. These extras provide the ideal hunting experience.  Sights come in 3-pin or 5-pin and there is a large variety to choose from, offered by a number of manufacturers.

Fixed plate designs are the most common on sights.  This means the sight bracket is attached directly to the bow. It is usually mounted with two Allen screws and the sight and bracket remains fixed.  A dovetail mount is another design where you mount a separate bracket that has a dovetail groove in it. It is designed to take on and off of the bow easily, whereas the fixed plate design stays on the bow at all times.

Compound bow sights come in moveable, fixed, 3D competition, and pendulum styles:

  • The moveable bow sight is one pin which can be moved before every shot and is adjusted for distance. A scale, locking nut, and a pointer is used to set the pin for the exact yardage.
  • Fixed pin sights are the most popular and these have 3 or 5 pins. They are generally set so that the lower pin shows the furthest distance, and the top pin shows the closest distance.  Once they are set, they remain that way the entire time you may be hunting.
  • 3D competition bow sights are designed for use in competition. They are more expensive and complex but are the most accurate you will find.
  • Pendulum bow sights are generally used for shooting from tree stands up to 30 yards. With this type of sight, the shooter does not have to guess the angle of the shot.

Top Compound Bow Sights for Hunting

Below are reviews of the top sights for compound bows available on the market today:

This pin sight boasts Smart Pin technology resulting in dead-center accuracy at various distances. This technology designed by engineers at Trophy Ridge is called React. It enables sight pins to react to each other sight themselves in. Using this sight, you can be sighted in a 20, 30, 40, 50, or 60 yards in less than 10 minutes.  The math is calculated for you so that you can have 5 pins sighted in less than 10 minutes.  This provides accuracy and you will not need to keep tweaking pins for longer distances.

[easyazon_link identifier=”B00AHMO7PA” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Trophy Ridge 5-pin bow sight[/easyazon_link] features a tool-less micro windage and elevation adjustment . Once you lock into a distance, the rest of the pins fall into place.  React technology is precise at predicting the pin gap, and bases it’s calculation on a distance between 20 yards and all other yardage.  The sight is made using the Ballistix Copolymer System which is as tough and strong as aluminum, but with 25% less weight.  Vibration is reduced because of the soft-touch coating.  A reversible mounting bracket is also included for high/low anchor points, and multiple mounting holes provide versatility.  This sight is available for left or right-handed individuals.  A Rheostat light is included which provides different levels of brightness different light conditions.

#2: Field Logic IQ 5 Pin Sight Review

Retina Lock instant feedback Technology which controls muscle memory, form and consistency provide a perfect alignment for a perfect shot.  This sight is designed for right-handed bows. It has stack tight .019 fiber optic pins, and an adjustable second axis.  It also features a windage micro adjust knob so that you can adjust without the use of tools, optional quiver mounting holes, optional bow mounting   Lightweight fiber polymer construction and silent coat finish makes this bow sight lightweight, quiet, and durable. The manufacturer offers a money back guarantee if you cannot shoot longer distances and tighter groups.

Arrows have been around before recorded history.  The older arrows had stone-tips and they were used with and without bows and were stored in quivers.  There are several parts to an arrow.  The shaft is the main part and all of the other parts are attached to it.  Older shafts were made from bamboo, reeds, and wood; shafts used today are made from carbon fiber, reinforced plastic, aluminum, or a combination of materials.  When the combination is used, it is usually carbon fiber on the outside wrapped around an aluminum core.

How stiff the shaft is, is called the spine.  It relates to how much or how little the shaft bends when you put pressure on it. The part of the arrow which is the most function is the arrowhead.  These are generally made from a hard material such as metal.  Sometimes the shaft of the tip is sharpened and used, but more often arrowheads are separate.  Types of arrowheads include Bodkin points, Judo points, broadheads, and blunts.

Fletchings are another part of the arrow which acts as wings.  They are located at the rear of the arrow and use a little force to stabilize the arrow while in flight. In other words, they are designed to keep the arrow “on its course.”  Fletchings were often made with goose or turkey feathers, but modern fletchings are made with plastic, also called vanes. When bird feathers are used, they must come from the same side of a bird if used on one arrow. This is because there is a small twist in these feathers which makes the arrow turn while in flight, and improves accuracy.

best hunting arrowsA nock is a part of the arrow located at the very back.  It is a notch that keeps the arrow in place on the string when you are drawing the bow.  Sometimes nocks are separate pieces of plastic or wood, and sometimes they are slots that are cut into the arrow.

If you are thinking about using arrows for the purpose of hunting, be sure you select the right ones.  If you are using a high-performance bow, do not use cheap arrows.  By doing this, you will decrease the performance of the bow. The main thing that you should consider when purchasing an arrow for hunting is the spine.  There are two types of spine – dynamic and static.  The dynamic is related to how much the shaft gives when the arrow is released.  Static spine is how resistant to bending the arrow is. After you understand the spine, then you need to take into consideration what type of game you are hunting.  For hunting large game, you will need an arrow with a lot of kinetic energy. Smaller animals won’t require such high energy or poundage.

Helical offset fletching makes the arrow turn while in flight which stabilizes the arrow; therefore, helical fletching is more stable.

There may be a variation in colors, but the sets will be matched sets of six.  Feather length can be 3” to 4” depending on the size of the shaft.  The 1716 and 1816 are cut to length with a one-piece glue in target point.  The 1916s are cut to length with an aluminum insert installed with a 100gr screw in point.

It is important that you take precautions when using carbon arrows.  Carbon arrow shafts can break after being shot into a large game animal.  Inspect the arrow shaft before each shot to be sure that does not have nicks, splits, dents, or cracks. When a carbon arrow breaks, there is a possibility that it may shatter resulting in sharp fragments that can be harmful especially if ingested. This may happen for several reasons including the angle upon impact, or the reaction of the animal. Carefully inspect the arrow after removing it from the animal, and inspect the meat around the area of the wound. Dispose of any flesh that contains carbon splinters.

A bow stabilizer is important if you want to increase shooting accuracy.  It helps lessen bow movement after a shot, and it balances out the weight of your bow.  It should hold your bow steady when it is at full draw, as well as when the arrow is released. When a bow is at full draw, energy builds up in the limbs, cables and other parts of the bow.  Once the arrow is released,  the energy changes abruptly, affecting the flight of the arrow, as well as the bow.  The stabilizer should hold everything stable when this happens. Many stabilizers also reduce noise, hand shock, and vibration, which helps  improve placement of the shot.

Stabilizers come in various styles, sizes, and colors, but they can all screw into your bow.  The added weight to the front of your bow offsets the draw pulling the bow out of alignment, which it often does during aiming. The added weight also steadies the bow.  A stabilizer absorbs vibration force, and reduces shock to the hand.

The size of a stabilizer should be determined by what you will be using it for.  If you are going to be using it for target archery, then a longer, heavier stabilizer is preferred.  The length and heaviness provides more stability when you are shooting.  If you will be bowhunting, then a shorter and lighter stabilizer is more effective.  This is because a heavier, longer stabilizer can be cumbersome when you are hunting animals.

Materials such as plastic, metal, rubber, or a combination of material are used to create stabilizers.  The material and its location affects the performance of the stabilizer.  A stabilizer has a tubelike shape and when attached to the bow, it can cause the bow to be a little heavy.  Sometimes this heaviness is preferred, especially during target competition. But, many manufacturers use material like ABS plastic or carbon as an option to keep the bow as lightweight as possible, when needed.

The dampener on the stabilizer is what reduces vibration and noise.  Most dampeners are made of rubber which acts as a vibration dampener and prevents vibration in the bow’s riser. The most effective set up is when a weight is on the front of the stabilizer right after the dampener.  This maintains effective balance and keeps the bow stable while you are shooting.  It also makes the dampener more effective because it is further away from the bow which decreases the vibration even more.  When vibration is decreased, it is less likely that other accessories will loosen.

#3 Bee Stinger Sport Hunter Xtreme Stabilizer Review

[easyazon_image align=”right” height=”40″ identifier=”B00IOQC8DO” locale=”US” src=”https://nqo.psw.mybluehost.me/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/31zNMK7gj4L._SL160_.jpg” tag=”astraightar0d-20″ width=”160″]The [easyazon_link identifier=”B00IOQC8DO” locale=”US” tag=”astraightar0d-20″]Bee Stinger stabilizer[/easyazon_link] was developed for optimal stabilization while minimizing vibration caused by shooting.  It features a Sims Internal Harmonic Dampener and a De-Resonator which effectively combine to minimize vibration that is transferred from the riser to the stabilizer when the arrow is released.  The 1 ounce end weights give users the option of adjusting the stabilizer to meet the balance requirements of the hunting bow that they are using.

The patented design of this stabilizer has the compact disc weight at the furthest point of attachment from the bow or the “distal end.”  A very light, rigid carbon fiber rod is used to connect the disc weight to the bow.  This carbon fiber rod is critical because if the rod is weak, the weight cannot effectively resist the energy once the arrow is released.  Bee Stinger works well because the weight is mainly at the distal end and the rod is ultra-light and rigid.  Available lengths for this stabilizer are 6, 8, and 10 inches.  It also comes in a variety of colors like blue, camo, green, camo, pink, purple red, yellow, and Realtree APS.
